🎃👻 A Spooktacular October SOAG Event at Canter's Cave! 🍂🧡

The Jackson County Board of Developmental Disabilities had such a wonderful time hosting the October Southern Ohio Advocacy Group (SOAG) event at Canter's Cave! Our activities lined up perfectly with the spooky season, making for a day filled with learning, self-advocacy, friendship, and fall fun!

We kicked off the day with a meaningful and thought-provoking activity led by Jackson County Board SSA Brandi Yerian. Advocates were encouraged to identify the barriers they face in their everyday lives and symbolically "bury" those barriers. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy, overcoming obstacles, and empowering individuals to have their voices heard!

Following this activity, Tim Jones from McWilliams Funeral Home of Wellston, Ohio, shared an informative presentation highlighting the importance of end-of-life planning and making sure our wishes are known. This valuable discussion encouraged advocates to think about planning for the future and the importance of having a voice in decisions that affect their lives.

After an amazing lunch, the fall festivities were in full swing! 🎃 Attendees enjoyed pumpkin decorating, a delicious s'mores station, creative mask-making stations, and a quiet room featuring the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus! Meanwhile, DJ Funky Flint kept the music going and everyone grooving throughout the afternoon! 🎶🕺

❤️ A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this event such a success!

💙 EXCITING NEWS ABOUT OHIO’S BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM! 💙

Since its statewide launch in May 2025, Ohio’s Blue Envelope Program has grown faster and farther than we ever imagined! What began as a program supported by the Southern Ohio Council of Governments (SOCOG) has now grown into something much bigger.

We are excited to announce that the Ohio Blue Envelope Project has officially transitioned from SOCOG to BeEnabled Advocacy Alliance (BEAA)! 🎉

BEAA is a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing disability access, emergency preparedness, public safety education, and community-led innovation for people with disabilities. BEAA is led by members of the intellectual and developmental disability community, including Executive Director Jen Schlegel.

Since the Ohio Blue Envelope Project began in 2024, SOCOG has helped expand the program to 84 of Ohio’s 88 counties! 💙

As the program enters this next chapter, BEAA will focus on maintaining continuity while continuing to build and improve the program. Upcoming priorities include:

📬 An accessible online hub where families can request Blue Envelopes and county boards can manage and track materials in one convenient location.

🚔 Additional first-responder training developed with input from people with disabilities and the disability community.

BEAA is committed to keeping the Ohio Blue Envelope Project community-led, accessible, and responsive to the needs of people with disabilities, families, county boards, and public safety partners.

If you would like to support the program, request an envelope, or explore a partnership, please contact Jen Schlegel at [email protected].

SOCOG is proud of how far the Ohio Blue Envelope Program has come and grateful to everyone who has helped make that growth possible. We are excited to see BeEnabled Advocacy Alliance carry the program forward and build on the foundation established across Ohio.

💙 Here’s to the next chapter of the Ohio Blue Envelope Project!

A disability-led non-profit working for housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and money security, so disabled people can run their own lives.
