Our beloved friend and fellow Kiwanian, Norm Gilliland, passed away last Saturday.
Norman Lee Gilliland, Jr., 67, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away on May 2, 2026, just eight days shy of his 68th birthday. Born on May 10, 1958, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Norman was the beloved son of Shelva Jean Gilliland and Norman Lee Gilliland, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death.
Norman was a proud graduate of Jackson High School, Class of 1976, and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Business/Management from the University of Rio Grande in 1980.
He dedicated much of his life to his career in community journalism, serving as publisher of the Jackson County Times-Journal from January 1983 until April 2017. During that time, he also took on the role of publisher for the Pike County News Watchman from June 2011 through April 2017. Through his work, Norman became a trusted voice in the community and a champion for local stories and people.
Norman was deeply committed to the community he loved. He served as President of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce and was an active member of numerous organizations, including Kiwanis International, the NAACP, the John Gee Black Historical Center, the Jackson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and the Jackson/Vinton County Farm Bureau. His dedication to service left a lasting mark on Jackson and the surrounding communities.
Known for his outgoing personality and infectious smile, Norman had a way of lighting up any room he entered. He was kind, thoughtful, and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh, often going out of his way to bring joy to others. Above all, Norman loved his family fiercely and would give the shirt off his back to those he cared about.
He is survived by his brothers: Mike Gilliland and David J. Gilliland (Rachel); his nephews: David E. Gilliland and Jesse Gilliland; his nieces: Shelby Gilliland, Destiny Gilliland, and Madison Gilliland; his uncles: Larry Goodwin (Bev) and David Goodwin; and his aunt, Mary McClure. In addition to his parents, Norman was preceded in death by two aunts and two uncles.
Norman’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, service, and unwavering love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched.
