This is what we do, what we specialize in. The most broken. But today, Ducky Von Steven got his very first bath ever. These are the little wins, a puppy able to finally get a bath to ease the pain of his literal melting skin. He couldn't get enough of it and just pushed into Natalie's hands as she bathed him. This is the second pup we have said yes to like this in just a couple of weeks and the critical requests never stop coming. We just said yes to an entire family of a super sickly and starved mama along with her entire litter of critical puppies. Frappe is in ICU at the vet clinic tonight again trying to survive, thanks to your prayers and wishes he has made it another entire day!! Keep that momentum moving forward guys!! You are the reason, put your capes on and keep being the superheros! We appreciate you and the fact this puppy could get his first bath in the safety and love of the Mission.

Today and every day, Mac’s Mission is a place where compassion, community, and connection come together.

On Juneteenth, we honor a day of freedom, reflection, resilience, and the continued importance of learning, listening, and standing together.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans and African Americans in the United States. June 19, 1865, is recognized as the true end of slavery in the United States, and today serves as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the work still rooted in justice, equity, and community. So unfair it took 2.5 years for freedom to be.

At Mac’s Mission, we are grateful for the people who make up our rescue family: our supporters, adopters, fosters, volunteers, donors, local businesses, nonprofits, and every person who chooses kindness in big and small ways. We honor Opal Lee today especially.

We honor Juneteenth today with open hearts, grateful spirits, and a continued commitment to community.

Our wrong answers:
A sun-dried dragon fruit?
An ancient leather football found in a haunted barn?
A forgotten Thanksgiving ham from 1847?
A melted gargoyle?
The inside of a couch cushion after 47 raccoons moved in?
A cursed raisin with feelings?

Nope.

This is the skin of a six-month-old puppy.

Six. Months. Old.

A baby.

A puppy who should be soft, wiggly, ridiculous, chewing on things he shouldn’t, learning toys, learning love, learning that hands are kind.

Instead, his skin looks like this because he has gone through absolute hell. Infection. Pain. Crusting. Rawness. Misery. Neglect so bad that no one would ever guess this belonged to a puppy who has barely even started his life.

This is devastating. He is hurting. He was abandoned. He was alone.

But he is not alone anymore.

He is with us now, and we are going to fight for every inch of healing he deserves. Donations are what let us say yes to the ones who arrive broken, painful, expensive, and desperately in need of immediate care.

A huge thank you to Lee at The Asher House for the shout out and for helping spread awareness about the realities of caring for dogs with medical needs—especially breeds like French Bulldogs.

As Lee mentioned, these dogs may be adorable, but they often come with lifelong medical challenges that require a significant commitment of time, care, and financial resources. That's why adopting through a rescue is such a meaningful choice. Not only are you gaining a wonderful companion, but you're also supporting overcrowded shelters and rescues that work tirelessly to give animals a second chance.

At Mac's Mission, we specialize in special needs animals and regularly take in some of the most challenging medical cases—dogs suffering from abuse, traumatic injuries, neglect, and congenital birth defects. While their journeys aren't always easy, they are absolutely worth it, and they deserve loving families just as much as any other pet.

We're grateful to see fellow rescuers like Lee using their platform to educate, advocate, and shine a light on the work being done across the rescue community. When rescues, advocates, and animal lovers come together, we can make an even bigger difference for the animals who need us most.

Thank you again, Lee, for helping raise awareness and for supporting rescue.

So much has been happening lately, and we wanted to give everyone an update on a couple of our special kiddos. ❤️

🐾 Frappe Update

Frappe, the weakest of Roxie's puppies, was taken back to the vet yesterday. He's still not eating well on his own and requires syringe feeding. He was found to be dehydrated and has developed an abscess in his neck, so he was started on antibiotics and is receiving fluids twice daily.

He's currently on a prescription critical-care canned diet and is still getting Nutri-Cal and Karo syrup whenever his blood sugar drops too low.

The good news is that his bloodwork remains stable. Our team and veterinarians believe that Frappe was simply so malnourished that his tiny body wasn't able to fight off an infection once it started brewing. The infection caused discomfort, which then made him even less interested in eating.

But today brought a reason to smile.

This morning, staff checked on him and reported:

"Much better today! Lots of energy this morning. He is actually aware of everything and was trying to nibble on me. More willing to take the syringes and was licking at them."

That may sound small, but for Frappe, it's HUGE. 💙

We're incredibly hopeful that he'll continue moving in the right direction and can soon focus on what puppies should be doing—playing, growing, and being carefree.

He has a follow-up appointment in one week unless anything changes before then. Donations toward Frappe's medical care are greatly appreciated.

🐾 Tongs Update

Then there's Tongs.

Tongs suffers from severe luxating patellas in both back legs, causing him significant pain and discomfort. After careful discussions between our medical team and veterinarians, the decision was made to perform a double amputation.

While that sounds scary, Tongs already gets around remarkably well on his two front legs and has shown us just how resilient he is.

Today, he underwent surgery to remove the first leg. The second procedure will take place in about a week or so. The surgeries are being done separately to reduce blood loss and give his little body the best chance at a smooth recovery.

And now for the best news...

✨ Tongs already has an adopter waiting for him! ✨

Someone very near and dear to our hearts has stepped up to give this special boy the loving home he deserves. We know he is going to be absolutely spoiled, cherished, and adored.

Donations toward Tongs' medical care are also greatly appreciated as he begins this next chapter.

📣📣UPDATE ON THE PUPPY FROM THIS MORNING:

He is safe.
He is back at Mac’s Mission.
He has a name.

Everyone, meet Ducky Von Steven.

And friends, Ducky is a full-blown disaster with a tail that has apparently never received the memo to slow down.

He has Demodex mange.
He has roundworms.
He has secondary skin infections.
He had 20+ ticks on his tiny body.

His skin is angry. His body is tired. His little system is carrying more than any puppy should ever have to carry.

And yet?

He is literally one of the sweetest puppies you will ever meet.

He never stops wagging his tail.

Not at the vet. Not after being picked up. Not after being poked, checked, cleaned up, and started on the long road back to healthy.

This baby has every reason to be scared of the world, and instead he is standing there wagging like he just got invited to the best party of his life. ...and treats are LIFE!

Ducky Von Steven is now settled in at the Mission. He has started his medications. He has food, warmth, safety, and a nice soft bed that may very well be the first real soft bed he has ever had. That part wrecks me a little.

Because this is what your donations do.
Your donations are why we can jump off the cliff with an unknown landing.

We do not always know what we are getting into. We do not always know how bad the medical will be. We do not always know how many meds, vet visits, baths, skin treatments, dewormers, antibiotics, preventatives, or sleepless nights it will take.

But because of you, that landing becomes possible. Because of you, a puppy like Ducky does not have to stay lost, sick, itchy, infected, covered in ticks, and hurting on the side of nowhere. Because of you, the answer can be yes.

A handful of local people looked for him.
A handful of people found him.
A handful of people moved fast enough to get him to help.
And now all of us get to be part of lifting him the rest of the way.

Ducky Von Steven is safe this afternoon.

And his happily ever after started because people cared enough to act.
