Mississippi Votes is bringing Gulf Coast residents together for a Community Listening Session focused on the issues that impact you most. We want to hear about your experiences, the barriers you face, and what would make it easier to get involved, vote, and have your voice heard in your community.

In Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi shows us how history lives beyond a single generation. What happened before us shapes the families, communities and systems we inherit today. That’s why who tells our history, what gets taught and what gets remembered matters.

Black history is American history, and remembering it is part of understanding where we are, honoring those who came before us and deciding where we go next.

You cannot liberate what you refuse to remember.

Black August reminds us that the songs of the movement carried more than a melody. They carried hope, strength and a belief that change was possible.

“We Shall Overcome” became a powerful anthem of the Civil Rights Movement, and its message still resonates today. From the continued fight against injustice to movements for human rights around the world, its words remind us of the power we have when we stand together.

The song may be generations old, but the message still speaks.
