Congratulations to the Lubbock Professional Firefighters Association and the City of Lubbock on approving the first reading of their first-ever Meet & Confer Agreement!

Among the many important provisions in this agreement is the implementation of a 24/72 work schedule for Lubbock firefighters.

Firefighters traditionally work schedules averaging approximately 53–56 hours per week—far beyond the standard 40-hour workweek. Moving to a 24/72 schedule reduces that average to approximately 42 hours per week, providing firefighters with more time for physical and mental recovery between shifts.

This is more than just a schedule change. It’s an investment in recruitment, retention, firefighter health and safety, and quality of life. Better-rested, healthier firefighters ultimately mean a stronger fire department and a higher level of service for the citizens they protect.

Congratulations to everyone who worked to make this historic agreement a reality. This is a significant step forward for Lubbock firefighters, their families, and the community they serve.

Local 2073 board members are at the 58th Biennial International Association of Fire Fighters convention right here in Arlington, Texas!

From August 9–14, more than 1,000 delegates representing locals from across the United States and Canada are coming together to debate the issues, establish priorities, and set the course for the future of our union.

We’re proud to represent Irving’s firefighters, make our voices heard, and stand alongside our brothers and sisters from across the IAFF as we work to strengthen our union and the fire service.

This morning, members of the Irving Fire Department honored 19-year-old Isabella Gonzales of Carrollton as she was escorted through Irving to her final resting place at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

PFC Gonzales made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Her courage, selflessness, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, Isabella.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values reaching up to 109 degrees. The combination of extreme heat and humidity can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness.

Residents needing relief from the heat can cool down at these locations during regular business hours. Please note that luggage is not permitted inside these facilities.

The Salvation Army is also operating a cooling station at 250 E. Grauwyler Rd. from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Please stay hydrated, limit time outdoors when possible, and check on family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

Fort Worth residents: Your firefighters need you now.

Tell your City Council to stand with the Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Local 440 and reject any proposal to cut firefighter staffing.

Four-person staffing isn’t a luxury—it’s the nationally recognized minimum standard for safely and effectively responding to emergencies. Every firefighter removed from a truck means longer rescue times, delayed fire attacks, and greater danger for the families calling 911 and the firefighters risking their lives to answer that call.

When your home is on fire and your loved one is trapped, every second matters. You don’t want fewer firefighters showing up—you want enough firefighters to do the job safely and effectively.

Fort Worth’s firefighters have always answered the call for their community. Now it’s time for the community to answer theirs.

City management must stop treating public safety like a line item to be cut while protecting pet projects and bureaucratic priorities. Their duty is to the people of Fort Worth—not politics, not optics, and not misplaced priorities.

Return to the bargaining table. Negotiate in good faith. Protect the citizens of Fort Worth. Stand with the firefighters who stand ready to protect you every single day.

Support Local 440. Protect four-person staffing. Protect Fort Worth.

Fort Worth residents have been clear about what matters most to them:

FAST, RELIABLE Fire and EMS response when they need it most.

In the City of Fort Worth's own community survey, more than 90% of residents said it is unacceptable to cut Fire and EMS response. They also told city leaders that knowing firefighters and paramedics will be there quickly gives them peace of mind.

Unfortunately, this year's proposed budget moves in the opposite direction.

This isn't about politics or opinions. It's about whether Fort Worth families receive the level of emergency response they expect when they call 911.
When seconds matter, residents deserve the response they asked for, not less.

Fort Worth firefighters will continue speaking up because protecting this community starts with protecting the emergency response it depends on.

City leaders asked residents what mattered most. Residents answered. The budget should reflect those priorities.

As you prepare to gather with family and friends this Independence Day, the Irving Professional Fire Fighters Association reminds everyone to make safety your top priority when enjoying fireworks.

While fireworks are a holiday tradition, they also send thousands of people to the emergency room every year. According to the National Fire Protection Association:

• 2 out of every 5 fireworks injury victims are children under the age of 15.
• Children ages 10–14 experience the highest injury rates.
• Even sparklers burn at temperatures of more than 1,200°F, hot enough to cause severe burns in seconds.

Today is a disappointing day for the residents, visitors, and businesses of Grapevine.

Engine 1 is located in the heart of the city and provides first-due fire protection to some of Grapevine’s largest, busiest, and most densely populated areas. Removing this resource doesn’t just impact firefighters—it affects the safety of everyone who lives, works, and visits the community.

Adequate staffing and properly located fire apparatus are essential to protecting lives and property. Decisions that reduce emergency response capabilities have real consequences for both public safety and firefighter safety.

Elected and appointed officials are entrusted with making decisions in the best interest of the communities they serve. Today, that responsibility was not reflected in the decision to close Engine 1.

From 1884 to 2026, Grapevine Fire Department’s Engine Company 1 answered the call.

For 142 years, the firefighters assigned to Engine 1 responded to fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, rescues, and countless other calls for help. In the last decade alone, Engine 1 answered more than 20,000 calls, serving our community with pride, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to those in need.

Today, that legacy comes to an end.

A company built on service, tradition, and sacrifice—one that traces its roots to the earliest days of our city—will no longer answer the call.

The permanent closure of Engine 1 was not caused by a lack of demand, a lack of need, or a lack of dedicated firefighters. It was the result of decisions made by city leadership and fire administration despite concerns raised by citizens, firefighters, and community stakeholders.

Generations of Grapevine firefighters have ridden this company, answered alarms from this station, and served the residents and visitors who depend on us. Nearly every firefighter in our department has been assigned to Engine 1 at some point in their career, making today’s closure deeply personal for those who have served here.

Today we remember her legacy. Tomorrow, and every day after, we will continue to advocate for the level of service our community deserves. And no matter what changes may come, the dedication, professionalism, and commitment to those we serve will remain unchanged.
