Get to know our interns: Jeremiah!

"I'm in the new BA/BFA double degree program at Oberlin College. My main artistic passion is music, but I've also had the opportunity to work on creative writing and cinema.

I’ll be working with Kenedy Manuel at the Polklore Micro-Museum and making music inspired by this amazing place. It will all come together into an album that I will perform at the PreEnact on July 30th!"

In his latest body of work, Momentos, Hector Del Campo celebrates his heritage as a First Generation Cuban American through pieces inspired by childhood memories and meaningful life experiences. This exhibit features mixed-media collages and paintings that incorporate personal keepsakes from his youth, offering a reflection of his culture, family history, and identity.

Every piece tells a story that connects to Hector's family, and he hopes that viewers will find an intimate connection through the titles. Several titles are presented in both Spanish and English, honoring his family's language while also making his work accessible to non-Spanish-speaking audiences. Del Campo's goal with this show is "to inspire viewers and show them a part of my family and culture that they didn't know before."

Speck Gallery is showing the beautifully haunting work of Erik Thien in his most recent exhibition titled APPARITIONS. The 35 paintings in this body of work explore the impressions, shadows, and "ghosts" that linger in the psyche of our individual lives or the society around us.

Thien draws on his childhood memories growing up in the desert landscape. Images from southwestern folk mythology, such as riders, birds, and horses, appear in the paintings and seem to create their own worlds.

"The idea I'm trying to illustrate–A ghost-like idea, is the concept that either things we don't see or things we can't see anymore, like memory or encounter–something that was tangible once and now is not material, still affects you and has an effect on how you are today," says Thien.

Next up in our summer intern lineup is Aysha!

"I am a studio artist who explores emotion, memory, and self-reflection. I love using my hands to build and create, turning ideas and emotions into something physical that others can see and experience.

I am excited to work with the Harrison Center and see what I take away and gain along the way, so I can truly see the work and progress I can make with my art. One aspect of my internship is using my hands to handcraft flowers for the Bloombox Festival!"

Don't forget to register for a free Juneteenth history workshop this Thursday (6/18)!

Join history buff Sampson Levingston from 11:30am-12:30pm, as we focus on the history of this important holiday and the US colored troops in Indiana. Refreshments provided.

This session will be held at the Polklore Micro-Museum (1533 Lewis St), and will involve a lot less walking and a little more talking than Levingston's famous Walk & Talks. Come ready to learn!

Color and Flow is an immersive exhibition in the Gallery Annex exploring creativity, presence, and play through hand-tufted textile installations and paintings by Bekah Pollard. Inspired by the experience of “flow state,” the works invite viewers to slow down, engage their senses, and gently touch the pieces for a tactile connection.

In the adjoining hallway, Pollard's acrylic paintings reveal the origins of the installations, tracing the same lines and color relationships as they evolve.

Last week, two Harrison Center traditions—intern lunch and Storytelling Drawing—merged together for a shared afternoon of conversation and connection.

Longtime arts philanthropists Frank and Katrina Basile have made a lasting impact on Indianapolis’s cultural community through decades of support for the arts, including their ongoing connection to the Harrison Center.

The conversation offered a chance for interns to hear their story, reflect on community impact, and engage deeply with people who help shape the city’s creative ecosystem.
