Our partners at the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana need your help to ensure Fair Housing programs are not eliminated from the federal budget. Fair housing is not a partisan issue, it's the law, but it risks becoming an unfunded mandate across the country, including for Indiana's ONLY fair housing center. This would require them to reduce their staff and service area, and as a result, many Hoosiers would lose their primary line of defense when they face housing discrimination.

Tell your lawmakers they don't get to call open season for landlords to discriminate against their tenants. They must release the funds already promised to organizations like FHCCI and keep them funded in 2027.

Indiana is, unfortunately, leading the nation in foreclosures. While many think lower housing costs compared to the national average would protect our state's homeowners, the reality is that Hoosier homeowners are feeling the pinch as all of their costs go up, and many of our state's residents work in industries disproportionately impacted by volatility in global markets.

This trend is concerning in and of itself, but we see compounding threats as HUD moves to restrict foreclosure prevention counseling, and predatory actors pitch "foreclosure rescue" to vulnerable homeowners while simply stripping them of equity.

At the federal level, HUD should ensure foreclosure prevention counseling remains available to any homeowner who needs it. At the state level, Indiana should put common sense consumer protections around so-called home equity investments to ensure vulnerable Hoosiers are not taken advantage of. Thanks to Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana for their steadfast commitment to equality in housing for all Hoosiers, and for shedding light on this critical and ongoing issue.

Federal lawmakers are in the process of setting the budget for FY27, and social service providers are watching closely. The HUD budget contains appropriations for financial capability education, housing assistance vouchers, homeless services, and accessible housing for people with disabilities. Demand for all of these services is increasing as housing costs continue to strain budgets to the breaking point.

Make sure lawmakers hear from you that housing assistance is more important than ever to Hoosier communities, and our nation's budget should reflect that.

Gas is $5 a gallon. That's pushing up the cost of groceries. Housing, healthcare, utilities and childcare costs were straining household budgets long before the words "affordability crisis" became standard in conversation.

These conditions might be terrible for the average person, but they're ideal for predatory lenders. Prosperity Indiana joined more than 100 other groups in urging congress to enact a national interest rate cap of 36% and eliminate loopholes that allow predatory lenders to sidestep state-level interest caps. High cost loans trap people in debt by design. Hoosiers deserve better.
