Jesus Led His Disciples Away From Fishing

Jesus turned four of his future apostles away from their fishing careers, transforming them into evangelists instead, or as Christ called them, ‘fishers of men’ (Matt 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11). Additionally, after Peter returned to being a fisherman in John 21:1–17, Jesus led him away from this career again, making him the leader of his Church instead [if John 21:1–25 is not a later addition]. (1) Regardless, Jesus probably led his apostles away from being fishermen because the Bible negatively portrays fishing through metaphor (2) and description. (3)

Jesus Has Absolute Sovereignty Over Animals

Jesus is both fully human (John 1:14; Phil 2:7–8; Heb 2:17; 1 John 4:2) and fully God (John 1:1–4, 1:10, 10:30, 17:21, 20:26–29; 1 Cor 8:6; Phil 2:5–6; 2:11, 3:20; Col 1:15–19; Titus 2:13; James 1:1; 2 Pet 1:1). Since Jesus is God, he owns all the animals (Ps 50:7–11, 104:24). Christ as the Lord gives animals life and can take it as he pleases (Deut 32:36–39; Job 1:21; Rev 1:18). In contrast, finite humans like ourselves do not have the absolute sovereignty to take the lives of animals as we please, like God (Jesus) does (Num 23:19; 1 Sam 15:29; Hos 11:9).

Jesus is [Mostly] Omniscient

Jesus is omniscient (Matt 17:26–27; Luke 5:4–6; John 1:47–48, 4:16–18, 6:64, 11:14–15, 16:30; 21:17 [if John 21:1–25 is not a later addition]). (1) However, sometimes Jesus did not have access to information. For instance, when Christ was twelve years old, he gained wisdom (Luke 2:40–42), indicating that he was not omniscient when he was young. Furthermore, in Luke 8:43–46 an incurably ill woman touched Jesus’ cloak and was healed, but Christ felt power leave him, and he did not know who touched him. Likewise, in Matthew 24:36–37 and Mark 13:32–36 Jesus stated that he did not know when he would return for his Second Coming, and that only his Father knows. Therefore, Jesus is mostly omniscient, but sometimes he is not.

Meat Consumption is Associated with Evil in the Bible – Part 4

Isaiah 11:6–9 and 65:25

Isaiah 11:6–9 and 65:25 prophesy an everlasting return to the original design in which humans and animals eat only plants (Gen 1:26–2:8). (1) These verses also link meat consumption with evil. One commenter stated, “Actually, these passages indicate very specifically that carnivorous activity is an evil—that is, a physical rather than a moral evil. The Hebrew word translated ‘hurt’ in the KJV of Isaiah 11:9 and 65:25 is raa. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, the most frequent translation of this word is ‘do evil’. Other translations include ‘afflict’ and ‘do wickedly’. It is related to ra, the usual word for ‘evil’ in the Old Testament—and that includes both moral and physical evil. As for the word translated ‘destroy’ in the KJV in Isaiah 11:9 and 65:25 (shachath), the core meaning is ‘mar’ or ‘corrupt’. No wonder carnivorous activity has no place in the new creation!” (2) Isaiah 11:6–9 and 65:25 further associate meat consumption with evil.

Our ministry was delighted to meet Senator Doug Mastriano at Monday’s Humane Lobby Day. He’s the prime sponsor of ‘The Beagle Bill,’ which would outlaw cosmetic testing on animals in Pennsylvania. We’re happy to know a fellow Christian is fighting for the animals in the Senate!

Meat Consumption is Associated with Evil in the Bible – Part 3

First Corinthians 10:3–6

In 1 Corinthians 10:3–6, the authors cite Numbers 11:4–34, when the people were killed for consuming meat when they had no need. First Corinthians 10:6 states, ‘Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.’ The evil these people desired was meat (Num 11:4–34)! This claim fits the context, as the remainder of the chapter discusses the consumption of meat (1 Cor 10:19–30). Fittingly, one commentator stated about 1 Corinthians 10:6, “So Paul infers that the Corinthian Christians should not lust after, or desire the meat offered in sacrifice to idols, lest it should lead them also to sin and ruin.” (1) First Corinthians 10:3–6 further associates meat consumption with evil.
