Did Jesus Drown Pigs? Part 1
‘The Exorcism of the Gerasene Demoniac’ (Matt 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39) is, admittedly, a heartbreaking story for animals. In this account, two men were possessed by demons collectively named ‘Legion.’ Jesus exorcised the demons, permitting them to possess around two thousand pigs instead. The pigs then rushed down the hill into the sea and drowned. Presumably, either the pigs were driven to insanity, or perhaps the demons forced them to drown. Importantly, Jesus did not drown the swine. However, he did permit the evil spirits to possess the pigs. Based on this decision, atheist Bertrand Russell (AD 1872–1970) accused Jesus of lacking virtue. (1) This situation begs the question of why the mostly omniscient Jesus (2) would let the pigs be possessed, as it led to their death.
