"The President of the Christian Animal Rights Association, Matthew A. King, singled out Ferdinand, a 2017 animated feature directed by Carlos Saldanha. It’s loosely based on a 1936 children’s book, The Story of Ferdinand, written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson. King saw the movie not long after going vegan and appreciated its implied criticism of bullfighting and the slaughter of animals for food."

Will Christians Eat Passover Lamb on the New Earth?

Jesus stated in Luke 22:15–16, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 22:15–16 at first appears to imply there will be meat-eating on the New Earth. Luke 22:15–16 could be interpreted as indicating that Jesus will eat the Passover lamb in the world to come. In this passage, the phrase ‘kingdom of God’ refers to the New Earth. (1) Passover was typically celebrated by slaughtering lambs and eating their flesh (Exod 12:1–51; Deut 16:1–8), but killing animals will not be present in the fullness of the kingdom of God – the New Earth. Nor will meat be eaten on the world to come! (2) The Lord's Supper replaced the Passover until after Christ’s return. (3) However, the Passover that will be reinstated on the New Earth will be without a physical lamb, (3) identical to the Passover in Luke 22:7–16 and its parallel passages (Matt 26:17–26; Mark 14:12–22), which had no physical lamb present (Jesus figuratively symbolized the lamb). (4) Similarly, on the New Earth, Jesus will symbolically represent the Lamb (John 1:29, 1:36; 1 Cor 5:7–8; 1 Pet 1:19) at the Passover (3) and the ‘meat’ will be nonliteral, too (John 6:53–57).

Jesus Fulfilled the Passover (For Now)

Previously, the Passover required a lamb to be slaughtered (Exod 12:1–51) at the temple (Deut 16:1–8). Jesus fulfilled the Passover and replaced it with the Lord’s Supper instead (Luke 22:15–20). However, the Lord’s Supper is time-sensitive and will end after Christ’s return (1 Cor 11:17–34). Importantly, the Passover will be reinstated on the New Earth (Luke 22:15–16), without the lamb, just like the Passover in Luke 22:7–16 and its parallel passages (Matt 26:17–26; Mark 14:12–22) had no physical lamb present. (1) Instead, Jesus will symbolically represent the lamb (John 1:29, 1:36; 1 Cor 5:7–8; 1 Pet 1:19) and the temple (Rev 21:22) at this New Earth Passover.

The Passover in Luke 22:7–16 Had No Physical Lamb Present

Luke 22:7–16 and its parallel passages (Matt 26:17–26; Mark 14:12–22) describe Jesus celebrating the Passover prior to his death (Matt 27:50; Mark 15:37–39; Luke 23:46). Conversely, John states that Christ perished before the Passover celebration (13:1, 19:30–34). Pope Benedict XVI (AD 1927–2022) famously settled this seeming contradiction, stating, “In all likelihood, however, [Jesus] celebrated the Passover with his disciples in accordance with the Qumran calendar, hence, at least one day earlier; he celebrated it without a lamb, like the Qumran community which did not recognize Herod's temple and was waiting for the new temple.” (1) The Essenes inhabited Qumran. They were a virtually all-male community that celebrated the Passover without a lamb. (2)

There is further evidence that Luke 22:7–16 and its parallel passages (Matt 26:17–26; Mark 14:12–22) depict Jesus celebrating the Passover as the Essenes did. For example, in Luke 22:8–13, Christ instructs his disciples to arrange the Passover by meeting a man carrying a jug of water. Customarily, women in Israelite culture carried jugs of water. This location was likely an Essene-inhabited area of Jerusalem, as substantiated by a man carrying a pitcher of water, implying that women were not present. (3) In conclusion, Jesus likely celebrated the Passover in Luke 22:7–16 and its parallel passages (Matt 26:17–26; Mark 14:12–22) without a physical lamb, as the Essenes did. Instead, Jesus symbolically represented the Lamb (John 1:29, 1:36; 1 Cor 5:7–8; 1 Pet 1:19).

The Anti-Violence Principle – Part 2.

There are many times in the Bible where God condemns violence (Matt 11:12) by associating it with negative attributes (2 Sam 22:49; Job 20:19; Ps 18:48, 54:3, 55:9, 58:2, 72:14, 73:6, 74:20, 86:14, 140:1–4; Prov 4:17, 10:6, 10:11, 13:2, 16:29; Ecc 5:8; Isa 59:6; Jer 6:7, 20:8, 51:46; Ezek 7:11, 7:23 8:17, 18:10, 28:16, 45:9; Dan 11:14; Oba 1:10; Micah 6:12; Hab 1:1–9, 2:17; Matt 8:28; Acts 23:10; 1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7). Additionally, the Lord hates humans who love violence (Ps 11:5 NLT) and instructs Christians not to envy or be like a violent man (17:4; Prov 3:31). Similarly, in Matthew 26:52, Jesus says, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” In 2 Sam 22:1–3, David praises God for rescuing him from violence. The Bible views violence as theologically undesirable. “The Anti-Violence Principle,” recognizes that the Lord sees violence as bad and violent actions as corrupt and something to be ended. Our ministry utilizes “The Anti-Violence Principle” to oppose industries and activities that involve violence against animals, specifically in food production, experimentation, fashion, and entertainment. (1) Additionally, our ministry cites “The Anti-Violence Principle” to promote products that spare animals from violence in the food and fashion industries. (2)

The Anti-Violence Principle – Part 1

Interspecies violence makes God very disappointed. For instance, Genesis 6:11–13 states, “Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence. And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways. Then God said to Noah, ‘The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.’” Animals and humans had become violent with each other, which upset God. The word for “corrupt” in Genesis 6:11 is a derivative of the Hebrew shachath, which can also mean “ruin,” “decay,” “destroy,” or “spoil.” (1) Aptly, when the curse is removed (Rev 22:3) Isa 11:6–9 says there will be no hurting or destroying (shachath) amongst animals and humans on the New Earth. (2) Genesis 6:11–13 portrays an exact contrast of Isa 11:6–9, indicating that the Lord abhors interspecies violence and desires peace between species. Similarly, Isaiah 60:18–19 prophecies conditions on the New Earth, where violence will forever vanish from the land. (2)
