Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue of Long Island

Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue of Long Island A NOT-FOR-PROFIT 501c3 ORGANIZATION, 100% VOLUNTEER BASED DEDICATED TO THE CARE OF OUR RESCUES UNTIL SAFE AND HAPPY WITH THEIR NEW FAMILY IN THEIR HOME.

From the very minute we rescue any cat of any age, we treat them like our very own pet. We groom them, take care of all their medical needs and try to provide any comforts they may want or need - comfortable beds, their own toys they can take with them, healthy wet and dry food together with tons of love and holding and playing with them and keeping them as happy as possible until we help them fin

d the perfect home for their own personality. It is a very personal service - it is all about the cats! Every cat is delivered to their new home and settled in - and we stay in touch and often end up adopting out another cat to the same household at a future date. It isn't about the amount of cats we adopt out - it is about the care and happiness of the cat until we find the best adopter for them.

Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue of Long Island is running a 2+ month food drive - cat and dog food - to help so many in need in our community. We do not want them to have to surrender their pets because they cannot afford to feed them. We get those call all the time.

This is not something that can go on forever for any family. We can help so many for a few months here and there and move onto helping others who need the help.

We already spend over $1000-1200 in food a month to take care of our own colonies and rescue. We take from that what we can and donate it to the Huntington Food Pantry. we cannot add to that expense for this mission.

Then when people post they have cat food or dog food - if it's not too far - I go and get it. If it's very expired, I get rid of it. Then once a week I go to the Huntington Food Pantry and bring them whatever I collected for them. This is very time consuming. I am not looking to add more homes to pick up food from - I have a rescue to run and vet appointments and a colony and fundraisers and my own personal appointments. I am pretty wiped.

Sometimes it is expired food, and sometimes it's a few bags of dry food or cases. Of course more dog food is donated than cats. That's okay - it all is needed. I get rid of the food that has expired more than a week or two.

We have secured 3 definite spots to put boxes to collect pet food. 2 others places are getting corporate approval. All are within a 5 mile range. I will be responsible for emptying them out when called and delivering the contents to the pantry.

If others have busy locations and want to be responsible for emptying the boxes and dropping off the food at the pantry , I can supply the box and sign and add the location to the list. I can give community service if children are involved WITH their parents AND it is handled responsibly. We cannot disrupt any business. I am adame t about that.

I ordered decent looking new tall boxes for each place. I will have them next week. Signs are made.

I will post the locations once the boxes are placed and hope others come thru.

As a community I hope we can help get a ton of pet food. They will get food when they get food for their family at the pantry. They must be Suffolk county residents. Most are from Huntington.

This is not to supply colony caretakers. This is for those getting food help and then ask if there is pet food.

I will allow non perishable food (not expired) to be left in the box as well. Please have it in a bag and leave the bag in the box.

Open bags of dry food are okay if not expired and the top is rolled and taped shut. It cannot be open. If open food spilled at any location, we will lose the space.

Rescues goes far deeper than most know - so many needs and we need you! We are octopuses!

There are two signs. Each store has the choice of which sign works for them. Some places were specific on the wording.

Please pm me with any questions and stay tuned for the posting of locations. If you have any of eg food at home you fo not need - please just hold it until our boxes are in place.

Please don't start posting what I should do or where I should go and ask to put a box. I am doing what I am capable of. I welcome the help if it is consistent and responsible. Help would even be reading the posts of pet food being given away and picking it up and either bringing it to one of our boxes or to the pantry. That would be wonderful.

Thank you for your attention in reading this. Mary.

The greenhouse feeding stations are posted many times over the years helped so many colonies and is pretty much sustainable. Business people put them over their foam box houses with straw. Only one broke when a tree branch fell on it. Billy replaced one of their poles with A metal pipe and it won't happen again. Now I see so many using them. We are for 12 years.

Although more costly at first - sustainable saves money, time and stress . It just has to be cleaned.
So here is another Mary Tip. Using it for years.

Kids tunnels as shown in pictures. NOT cat or kitten tunnels -
KID tunnels.

When u have an area outside that needs to be shoveled to get the cats from point A to point B - USE THESE. Put a brick on each side one foot inside. Keeps it from blowing away.

I Have NEVER had any snow collapse these. They are like covered slinkies.

I have 2 outside my home today - I covered the openings at the ends just for today so snow doesn't blow in. I know the cats are hunkered down as well as possums. But they can get from a path on the side to my front walkway and go wherever they want from tomorrow on.

So I live in a condo with an HOA - so I used camouflage. Like below. They are very thick and fold back up and go back in their case for another storm. I connected the 2 with binder clips so I covered around 10-12'. So I will only have to shovel in front of the tube by walkway. Since this snow will last a while, I can't leave them up here but I can lift them and there will be an automatic smooth path .

This is also good from under a deck to ur yard against your house. They won't get snowed in.

There are cheaper tubes in many colors. Just many have a mesh net piece in them. That will not work. So look at it carefully. This one was $23 2 3 and 4 years ago. But are more money now. But in my opinion , worth it. Easy to store too. They store in a flat case. Light weight.

I wanted to add another one to it - but it draws to much attention and I can't have many more problems here. But it is fine and I only have about 24" to clear on one end so they have a clear safe trip thru to our walkway.

I suppose this may work if u want to feed in one end of the tube if u push food inside and they enter from other end. But only for one or two cats. I wouldn't leave food in there because u don't want raccoons tearing up tunnels to eat.

When feeding cats or in fact any animal outside, DO NOT mix the wet and dry food together.

The wet food will freeze And then the dry is useless. Feed separately and give at least double dry. Food helps them keep warm and in case you can't get there - they have extra food. .the next a few days is brutal and the days after it very very cold. If it is possible to warm the wet food and make it very mushy so they get water from it too - that's a huge help to them as well.

CODE BLUE! and getting worse next week. We never have these long stretches of cold weather.

Put a big flat bottomed bowl or tray of very warm water out for birds and squirrels. They need water more than food.

Do what u can to help any animal outside. I am grabbing dry straw now to bring to someone for their ferals.

Water. Warm food. Open garage a foot - but please put something under the door if u go to close or any animal in it will bolt and can caught under the closing door. Throw blankets in corner of garage they can tuck into.

Anything you can do , please do it. A little every day during this helps.

A dog tied up outside for Hours - call the police. It is illegal.

Please do your part for those animals that cannot help themselves.

At 7:00 tonight a big piece of our heart broke. It hurts so bad.

Our beautiful Grace passed away in her mommy's lap as she was eating a churu. She made one little cough and went limp. It was peaceful. Grace was between 18 and 19 years old.

Over the past week her routine was changing. She wasn't eating or pooping as much. She was losing her eyesight and was slipping a little when walking. She had a vet appointment tomorrow morning.

Grace had a huge presence in our rescue. She came to us at 3.4 lbs and was a mess. She smelled of death and her chances of survival was maybe 5%. She was a breeding machine who was thrown out. A wonderful friend of ours, Alex Aldama, found her under his deck in Brooklyn and we took her into our rescue. It took us many many years to get her health back and control her newly diagnosed diabetes. Finally it went into remission and she thrived.

When she moved to North Carolina almost 4 years ago she thrived. She had another buddy cat and they played. He passed away just a few months ago. She misses him.

This link is a video we did of Grace's life a few years ago. Please watch it. She was quite unique and omg we loved her so much. We will love her forever.

Fly high my love - until we meet again.
