Environmentalists Slam President Trump’s Waste of Taxpayer Dollars in
Order to Stop Offshore Wind

Buy-outs of offshore wind leases, most recently from RWE, are wasting billions of our tax dollars while leaving ordinary Americans with worse air quality, higher bills, and less energy security.

Farmingdale, NY – The Trump Administration is buying back offshore wind leases from developer RWE Offshore for $1.22 billion. The company has announced they will instead be investing that money in fossil fuel projects. This is the latest buyback and yet another attempt by the Trump Administration to cease America’s emerging offshore wind industry in favor of advancing polluting fossil fuels.

This latest deal comes at a time when we face rising energy costs and increasing energy demand. The administration has already spent nearly $4 billion of taxpayer money on buying back offshore wind leases, ensuring worsening fossil fuel pollution, energy instability, and the vast impacts of climate change. Since energy projects take many years to permit and build, these decisions also signal uncertainty throughout the entire domestic energy sector, as we have now seen how large-scale infrastructure projects can be politicized and undermined by a sitting President at any time.

Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, issued the following statement:

“This is the latest attack on offshore wind by a President who is clearly making our nation’s energy decisions based on his own personal whims, resentments, and conspiracy theories. The world is on fire, and President Trump is fanning the flames in order to support his fossil fuel friends. Here in New York, we are on the front lines of climate change. We are facing an energy shortage as we manage hotter summers and more extreme storms. Average families are struggling to afford electric bills. We risk brownouts and blackouts during periods of high energy demand.

At the same time, we are clearly seeing the benefits of offshore wind. South Fork Wind, America’s first commercial offshore wind farm, has helped keep electricity rates stable for Long Islanders, kept the lights on during peak demand, boosted our economy, and created good local jobs. New Yorkers know that offshore wind must be a crucial part of our energy mix, and that the Trump Administration canceling offshore wind leases off our coast will cause more fossil fuel pollution, more respiratory illness, and higher electricity bills. Decisions like these offshore wind buybacks only serve to keep us addicted to fossil fuels.”

“The Western United States and Europe are on fire, rivers and lakes are drying up, populations are increasing, and energy demand is on the rise. It is clear we need more energy than ever before, yet the president is spending American tax dollars to stop domestic production. Fossil fuel costs are soaring, yet the president targets wind projects which have already proven capable of delivering the energy we need efficiently and effectively. And as foreign wars, contested shipping lanes, and oil cartels continue to strangle our energy supply and drive-up costs, the president is taking active measures to strangle domestic energy production and the local jobs that come with it. It’s time to break the cycle of addiction to fossil fuels, to prioritize the health of Americans over Big Oil, and to usher in a new era of domestic energy dominance.”

Not only have electric rates been stabilized, but the enormous amounts of toxic and climate-destabilizing emissions that are kept out of the air that we breathe, day after day, year after year, make the rise of wind power absolutely priceless.

The value of fresh air is something we can all relate to even more today, as the severity of climate-driven wildfires affects us every time we inhale. The best minds on our planet have been warning us about this for decades. Now we're paying the ultimate price for inaction and the regrettable lack of political will among certain factions of our government.

The 250th Fourth of July celebration, also including the celebration of offshore wind delivering! South Fork Wind delivered ~10 GWh of clean renewable offshore wind to Long Island's grid! During the extreme heat wave, South Fork achieved an average 74.7% capacity factor and nearly 90% on July 2nd⚡️🇺🇸

We want to recognize the thousands of energy technicians and operators who kept things running through the holiday, proving that reliable, renewable, clean, domestic energy is possible!👷🏻‍♀️👨🏽‍🔧

This administration's all-out war on the environment, in favor of short-term profits for polluting industries, continues with their move to gut another bedrock environmental law that dates back to the 1970s.

This attempt to allow fossil fuel and other industries to entirely ignore the critical balance of nature is happening as we're all living through the impacts of human-caused climate change and massive loss of biodiversity on land and in our seas. Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, extreme storms, sea level rise, melting glaciers, and more have moved from the realm of prediction to observable, daily reality. This is the time to keep more oil in the ground, not to exploit every last part of the ecosystem that keeps us all alive.

Greenwashing is a deceptive marketing practice in which a company uses its resources to portray its products, services, or operations as environmentally friendly--when they are not. The goal is to take advantage of the genuine consumer demand for sustainability while avoiding genuine environmental responsibility.

The meat industry is one of the most eco-destructive industries on this planet. Changing the way they talk about themselves or how they prioritize the environment doesn't change that.

We get to choose whether or not to pay for the destruction of everything from the rainforests and global biodiversity to our air and climate stability every time we sit down to eat.

After encountering the “immense” challenge of actually executing its net-zero goal by 2040, JBS said it will instead lower its “emissions intensity.”

"March 31 (Reuters) - The American Heart Association's new nutrition guidance, released on Tuesday, emphasized a dietary pattern rich in vegetables, ​fruits and whole grains, prioritizing plant-based protein over meat."

Great to see the AHA speaking the truth and accurately portraying nutritional science, despite the unserious food pyramid that was recently released with the FDA's US Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Interestingly, the FDA said this about the AHA guidelines:

"The American Heart ​Association's guidance is aligned with the U.S. Food and ​Drug Administration's ⁠dietary guidelines on major issues, a spokesperson from the FDA said, adding they look forward to working collaboratively with AHA."

Let's hope that the collaborative effort starts soon and results in the realignment of the FDA's dietary guidelines with the best available nutrition evidence.
