For 50 years, the Howell Nature Center has provided a comprehensive education, recreation, and wildlife facility to individuals and groups from all over the Midwest. Situated on 230 acres between Howell and

Pinckney, offerings include retreat and meeting facilities, summer camps, wildlife rehabilitation, and education programs, a wildlife habitat park, team building, high-adventure challenge programs, Heifer Global Village, overnight group accommodations, and special events. The Howell Nature Center is a non-profit organization funded primarily through programs, private donations, and special events.

Patient of the week🐾

This juvenile opossum was brought in as an orphaned baby who was found alone in someone’s yard. She was healthy when she arrived at our clinic, but she was too young to be on her own.

Unfortunately, unlike most other species, orphaned opossums can’t be reunited with their moms. Mother opossums carry their babies on their backs once they outgrow the pouch, and sometimes they lose one without noticing and don’t go back for it.

We are able to help this adorable little creature and all our other patients thanks to your support. We are endlessly grateful for our compassionate and generous community. 💕

Today's Wacky Wednesday is brought to you by Pickles!

🛩️Peregrine falcons have vision 8x better than us, allowing them to spot prey from a mile away. They have tubular eyes, dual focus for tracking prey, and a nictitating membrane to keep their eyes clean and protected when diving. On top of that, they are able to detect UV light which aids in following mice or voles who leave a trail from their urine.
🛩️Cone shaped bones called tubercles break up and slow the wind when peregrine falcons reach their diving speed so the high pressure air does not blow directly into the lungs. This inspired the engineering of jet engines!
🛩️Peregrine falcons have a tomial tooth, and no, it is not a tooth! It is a sharp notch on the upper beak they use to quickly kill their prey while in the air
🛩️Talk about a comback from the 1960s. The pesticide DDT was heavily used in the mid 1940s and was negatively impacting bird species across America. Peregrine Falcons were added to the endangered species list in 1970 due to a concerning population decline from fragile eggs caused by DDT. In 1972 the use of DDT was banned. The Peregrine Fund started to breed birds in captivity and released over 4,000 falcons in 3 years! The falcons successfully returned to their native ranges and are seen on every continent except Antarctica.
🛩️The fastest animal, land and sea, in the world is the peregrine falcon with diving speeds reaching 240 mph! That's faster than a Formula 1 car!

Not all animals sleep at night like humans do. Comment below what percentage of mammals you think are nocturnal!
The answer to last weeks trivia is 99%! This takes into account for insects, fish, reptiles, and more. Many species have a quantity over quality strategy when it comes to offspring. It is common for them to drop eggs and leave them to fend for themselves.

Exciting news! 🙌

We are starting our very own wildlife rescue and transport group!

If you’ve wanted to help Michigan’s wildlife but haven’t been sure how, this could be a great opportunity for you! We often have finders with animals in need of lifesaving care but no way to transport them to us. Our rescue and transport volunteers will receive training on how to safely capture, handle, and transport wildlife. We get calls from all over lower Michigan, and the animals would need to be brought to us here in Howell. If you’re interested, email Laura at [email protected]!

Patient of the week 💕

Found lying on the side of the road, this red-tailed hawk came to us in critical condition, suffering from head and eye trauma. Based on how he was found, we presume he either flew into a car or was hit by one. We are treating his injuries, and time will tell if he will be able to recover.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for red-tailed hawks to be hit by cars due to their feeding behaviors. Hawks will often hunt along roadways, including highways, because the adjacent grass is usually mowed, making it easy to spot prey. They also eat roadkill, and they are slower to take off from the ground with the extra weight of the food they have consumed or try to carry away.

To help keep hawks and other birds of prey safe while driving, take these easy precautions:

🚮 Avoid throwing trash, including food items, out your car window. Food attracts animals like small mammals to the road, which in turn attracts predators and scavengers. Apple cores and banana peels are common culprits, since people think these items are ok to toss since they don’t have wrappers.
🦅 Stay vigilant while driving, keeping an eye on any raptors you see while being prepared to move or stop. If you see them eating at the side of the road, try to slow down and give them space.
⚰️ If you come across deceased animals in or near the road, move them away from the road if you can safely do so.

Did you know opossums are marsupials meaning they have a pouch they carry their babies in just like kangaroos?

Because of this, when a female opossum is a victim of a car strike, it often goes unnoticed that their babies are still alive.

So what can you do when you see an opossum who was a victim because of a car strike?

🌿Carry gloves, a blanket and crate in your car: we call this a wildlife rescuer kit and can help you in any animal rescue situation

🌿If the opossum is still alive, using gloves and a blanket, you can put it in a crate and bring it to a wildlife rehabilitation like the Howell Nature Center, please always call first!

🌿If the opossum has sadly crossed the rainbow bridge, you can check, with gloves, and see if the opossum is a female and if it has any babies In her pouch

🌿The final and most important step is making sure these babies get to a wildlife clinic ,like the Howell Nature Center, to make sure these babies can get properly rehabilitated and have a second chance at life!!

This is just one way you can live in harmony with wildlife and help our little friends have a second chance at life!!
