Patient of the week 💗

With hundreds of patients, it’s hard to choose which to feature! But we chose this little fighter because she could use all the good vibes she can get.

This fawn was admitted after being found trapped in a hole. Many times situations like these only require a helping hand to get the animal out, but in this case she was weak, dehydrated, and hypoglycemic. She was also at risk for capture myopathy after struggling for so long that she rubbed all her fur off in multiple places. We are hopeful but guarded about her prognosis.

Regarding our heavy patient load… Please have patience if you call us seeking help. With so many patients in care and an extremely high call volume, we are not able to return calls as quickly as we would like. We absolutely hate knowing there are animals in need waiting for our response, but we need to prioritize the care of our current patients to ensure they get the care they need to have their best chance of survival. Please reach out to other rehabbers until you find help. It’s baby season! 🍼

💗Attend our Baby Shower this Saturday, May 23, with a gift
https://www.howellnaturecenter.org/event/baby-shower/

Did you know it costs, on average, roughly $200 to rehabilitate each wildlife patient? 🐾🧡

We admit around 1,000 patients in need of lifesaving care between April-August, which equates to about $200,000 in expenses to give injured and orphaned wildlife a second chance!

Join us this Saturday from 12-2 to learn all about the wild rehabilitation process during our baby shower event!

Since we don't receive any sort of government funding, we are hoping to raise a bit more to help cover these costs. We are extending our appeal until July to try to make this happen. Please consider making a contribution to help make a difference for wildlife. https://howellnaturecentergiving.campbraingiving.com/

Endangered Species Day ‼🐾
Meet Savannah, Gilly, and Emy, three of our endangered species here at the Howell Nature Center.

May 15th is endangered species day and, along with our deep-rooted passion for wildlife, we strive to educate and inform. Many endangered species go extinct due to things such as habitat loss and human interference, including the animals we have here. It is due to the support from our amazing community that the lives of these animals can be changed and are provided care here at our sanctuary, but there are even more ways that you can help protect endangered wildlife. By protecting your local habitats, avoiding the use of harmful chemicals in your yard, and educating yourself on native wildlife, you can help protect and preserve our native species. 🐾🌱

Here’s a little more about our animals!

🦉Savannah is a short-eared owl; her species have become rare specifically due to habitat loss as they are ground nesters, but Savannah herself is with us due to a wing amputation.

🦉Gilly is a barn owl, with his species declining due to habitat loss and rodenticide. Gilly is in our care as he previously imprinted on humans and cannot be released back into the wild.

🐢Emy is a blandings turtle, her species are endangered due to habitat loss, and Emy herself is in our care as she is partially blind and would have difficulty on her own.

Thanks to our amazingly generous community, we have raised nearly $56,000 for our Spring Appeal, and we have received lots of much needed supplies from our Baby Registry and Amazon Wish Lists! THANK YOU!! 🙏

First fawn of the season! 🦌

This little girl was born on impact when her mother was hit by a car. Sadly, her mom and two siblings did not make it. She is very small, and her prognosis is guarded, but we are doing everything we can to give her her best chance. She has already stolen our hearts!

Spring is in the air and our clinic is about to get a lot busier!

We’re hosting a Baby Shower to prepare for the arrival of this season’s orphaned or injured wildlife. This is your chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at how we care for our smallest patients. During the event, you can peek through our observation window to watch live feedings, and you’ll even get to meet one of our permanent residents who first came to us as a tiny baby.

Our “nursery” requires constant supplies to keep these little ones healthy. To join the fun and support the cause:

Bring a gift: Check our registry for much needed items. https://www.amazon.com/baby-reg/laura-moranhowellnaturecenter-june-2026-howell/2PG2PQJ71DTLA

Enter the Raffle: Every guest who brings a gift will be entered to win an exclusive private meet and greet with one of our animal ambassadors. One winner will be named.

Learn and Observe: Discover the delicate process of wildlife rehabilitation firsthand.

Park admission is required for the general public. Members are free.
