It appears our video with the update on Pio was not visible to everyone. Let’s try again.
Pio was Distemper Positive, unfortunately the disease progressed and he had Advanced neurological signs which indicate that the virus has invaded the central nervous system, causing inflammation, demyelination (loss of the protective nerve covering), and tissue damage.
Other advanced neurological signs were Myoclonus: Involuntary, rhythmic muscle twitching (often called a "distemper twitch") that can persist even during sleep.Seizures: Frequently include "chewing-gum fits" (jaw-chewing movements with drooling) and generalized seizures.
Vestibular and Cerebellar Dysfunction: Head tilt, circling, rapid involuntary eye movements (nystagmus), and severe lack of coordination (ataxia).Paresis or Paralysis, (Pio had this in his back two legs) which is Progressive weakness or complete loss of movement, typically starting in the rear limbs and advancing to all four legs.
He was only eating if hand fed. He was deteriorating rapidly.
A decision, taken in consideration all the information from his veterinarian team at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists to end his suffering was made.
His Brucella Canis test came back as Negative .

Quick update on the last 4 dogs treated at
Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists with the same symptoms. All coming from the same area in Cleveland, TX .
We have advised the neighbors close to the areas where these dogs have been found and we are preparing a statement to be printed and deliver in and around the area with advise on how to prevent any more contamination of these two diseases.
Brucella Canis is the specific bacterium that causes Brucellosis Disease in dogs and though is rare it can be passed to humans.

Pio remains in critical care but his wound has improved but still has some discharge, healing tissue and strong smell; as it turns out, it was a pyotraumatic dermatitis or acute moist dermatitis, what is commonly known as a “hot spot” gone bad.
A persistent slowly worsening anemia showed up in his blood work this morning but doctor Bracho believes is due to the hookworm infestation, ongoing critical illness and the repeated blood draws.
He is eating and drinking well on his own.
He continues to have tremors but no seizure activity. His Distemper test is still pending.
We will continue to post updates as we get them.
Please send your applications to foster Pio once he is released from Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists . He weights 38.8 lbs and has been nothing but a sweetheart to everyone .

We have a sad update, we have lost King Arthur . He passed earlier today due to complications of Distemper and Pneumonia.
Distemper test came back as positive .
If you want to see the last video of him, please message Angelica InRescue but I don’t want you to have the last memory of him in that way.
We continue to fight for Pio.

08/22/2026

Another dog in need of urgent help came to us last night with an infected wound on his chin. He was transported to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists and after examination Dr. Sonnenshein called with an update on Pio, his name now.
His bloodwork showed that Pio is slightly anemic but not requiring a blood transfusion, his white blood cell count is increased, his blood sugar is borderline low so he is on dextrose in his fluids. He is positive for heartworm. The wound is a moist, infected erosion (not full thickness through the skin) under his chin; It was cleaned it and have it covered. After pain medication he continues to have myoclonus or repetitive muscle movements mostly affecting his jaw. Unfortunately, we have to suspect that this is due to an active or prior distemper infection but of course do not know for sure. Doctor was able to open his mouth but it was difficult. He will be offered some food later today to see if he can eat on his own.
Pio is under Critical Care and will update more as we get news later today.

Not a positive update. 😔

King Arthur had 2 grand mal seizures overnight. He has been started on Keppra as an anti-convulsant and he has had no further seizures. This could be concerning. Distemper panel and brucella tests are still pending. His red cell count is up to 29% and he is brighter and eating a bit more. We are continuing aggressive supportive care.

Then before 10am , he had another seizure and is constantly circling to the right and seems quite agitated. He was given some va**um to help stop the seizure. This is discouraging that the seizures are progressing.

Arthur, aka King Arthur at GCVS and Arthur the King has now been transferred to Critical Care and his prognosis is guarded. He finished his blood transfusion and his gums look a little pink now. Hasn’t had much of an appetite but he nibbled in a little food this morning but if he doesn’t eat more by tonight an nasogastric tube will be inserted to provide necessary nutrition. They tell me he is a sweetheart and has let them work on him without any issues.
We will continue to share the updates as we get them.

We were asked to help with a dog that needed Euthanasia as he was in pretty bad shape and looked like he was having a very hard time breathing, he was lateral and Distemper was suspected as he had nasal discharged from both nostrils. Arthur the King was picked up from the side of the road and when I saw the video I mentioned he looked like he was battling pneumonia. He headed to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists and it was confirmed, Arthur had a serious case of pneumonia, a case of anemia most likely due to the severe flea infestation, some ticks were found too; he has some skin issues but nothing that can’t be fixed, he has an elevated white blood cell count indicating he is fighting a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection or could be tick-borne illnesses or intestinal worms. More tests will tell us more tomorrow morning.
A Distemper and Brucellosis test have been ordered but results can take 3-4 days.
Poor Arthur, he also has some issues with his eyes, specially the right one where he has some deep corneal ulcer. He is an intact male but one testicle is like a micro-testicle, something unusual for sure. He is somewhere between 2-4 yrs of age. Weights about 8 lbs. Kidneys are ok. Liver is ok. He is getting a blood transfusion and the hardest part right now is his pneumonia. He will be hospitalized for a couple of days and we will update again as soon as we know more.

Someone needs a Kitten foster for at least 10 days.
Juda was saved from being stuck in a building a few weeks ago and is in the process of completing his vetting as he gains weight and age. He will be traveling to Seattle to Mimi Tzib when that is done, meanwhile, local foster is going on a trip and Juda needs a foster. Can you help?
