At Mercy House Global, we believe creating sanctuary means making room for people in every season of life.

Overcomers from the Houston area gathered today for our Local Hope Women’s Empowerment Luncheon! 🤎

It was a beautiful time of connection, encouragement, and growth as women shared a meal, built friendships, and learned how to create S.M.A.R.T. goals for their futures.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—helping turn big dreams into small, intentional steps toward meaningful change.

Through Local Hope, our desire is to create a sanctuary—a safe, welcoming space where women feel seen, supported, and encouraged to grow in confidence and take steps toward a hopeful future.

She once was afraid to speak English.

Today, she teaches it. 🤍

When Farzana first joined our Local Hope ESOL program, she described herself as shy and unsure of her English. She wanted to communicate with others, continue her education and find new opportunities—but she was afraid to speak.

At Local Hope, she found a safe place to learn, ask questions, make mistakes and keep trying.

Slowly, her confidence grew.

And today, Farzana stands in front of an English class helping other women learn the same language she once felt afraid to speak.

“Before, I was afraid to speak in front of people. But now I can stand in front of my students and teach them English. That made me realize how much I had improved.”

Handmade is beautiful. But handmade and fair trade aren't always the same thing.

Fair trade asks us to look beyond the product to the person behind it: Who made this? Was she paid fairly? Is this work creating consistent, sustainable opportunity?

These are questions we want to be able to answer.

When you purchase leather goods made by our artisan partners at ABKA Leather in Ethiopia, for example, you're supporting a women-owned and managed workshop where 80% of the staff are women. Their impact extends beyond the workshop, helping fund school fees, meals, and housing for girls in Dessie who later have opportunities to intern and learn valuable skills.

That's what Fair Trade Month is really about for us: knowing who made what we sell and choosing partnerships that create meaningful, lasting opportunity.

“My voice mattered.”

For Amber, that realization started before her internship at Mercy House Global even began.

When her college schedule conflicted with the internship, she spoke up instead of assuming the opportunity was lost.

And she was heard.

Through our Local Hope Program, Amber is gaining work experience, building confidence, learning to communicate, set boundaries, ask for help and discover the value she brings to the table.

This is what workforce development can look like: not simply offering a job, but creating a safe place to learn, grow and prepare for what comes next.

This is what it looks like when an opportunity keeps growing. 💛

Megan first came to Local Hope as a survivor of trafficking, looking for safety, stability, and a way to rebuild.

Today, she’s helping other women do the same.
As our Workforce Development Mentor, Megan recently completed 200+ hours of hands-on mentorship and earned her Peer Mentor Certification.

The support and opportunities once poured into her are now being poured into other women as they build skills, confidence, and independence.
