A great day of community, connection, and giving back!

We were happy to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Xi Alpha Omega and Sigma Theta Chapters, and the Ivy League Educational & Charities Foundation for their Back to School Supply Distribution.

Sickle cell disease affects more than the individual living with the condition. It impacts the entire family.

In this heartfelt moment, a daughter shares what it’s like having a parent with sickle cell disease. She explains that one of the hardest parts is when her mom is hospitalized and unable to attend important school events. While those moments can be difficult, she understands it’s because her mom isn’t feeling well.

Her story is a powerful reminder that sickle cell disease touches every member of the family and highlights the importance of support, understanding, and awareness.

A new study from NYU found that sickle cell disease (SCD) care varies across New York State, with major differences in hospital stays, costs, and access to specialized care. While New York City sees the highest number of hospitalizations, other regions experienced longer hospital stays and greater challenges accessing specialized treatment.

Researchers say these differences highlight the need for improved access to specialists, stronger transitions from pediatric to adult care, and more equitable healthcare for individuals living with sickle cell disease.
