Corrosion damage is not always visible on the surface. 🔍

Some forms of corrosion can develop beneath coatings, deposits, insulation, or other materials while the exterior still appears relatively intact.

That is one reason inspection and condition assessment are essential. The absence of obvious rust does not necessarily mean an asset is free from corrosion.

For Matt Dowden, corrosion started as part of the job. It became a career dedicated to protecting aircraft, improving readiness, and strengthening corrosion prevention programs.

Matt began as a U.S. Air Force Aircraft Structural Maintenance Apprentice, learning the fundamentals of inspection, documentation, treatment, and prevention. As his experience grew, so did his understanding of how directly corrosion affects safety, mission readiness, and long-term fleet health.

Over the years, he advanced through Journeyman and Craftsman roles into leadership, eventually serving as an Aircraft Fabrication Superintendent and corrosion program manager. Today, Matt works in industry at Av-DEC, supporting corrosion prevention solutions for defense platforms.

His journey shows how hands-on technical experience can grow into a career with an impact far beyond a single asset.
