George “Buz” Jochetz III — Founding Board Member and CanCare Golf Classic Chairman Emeritus

Buz was present at CanCare’s beginning. He served on our very first Board of Directors after the organization’s founding in 1990 and chaired the search committee that recruited CanCare’s first Executive Director.

Buz is perhaps best known as the heart of the CanCare Golf Classic. He chaired the tournament in its early years — including the 1997 and 2007 Classics, the latter alongside his wife, Cindy — and served for many years thereafter as Chairman Emeritus. His leadership helped grow the Classic into one of Houston’s premier charitable tournaments, raising millions of dollars that continue to fund our mission more than thirty years on.

As he once put it, in his own words as Classic Chairman: “I can’t wait… golf, fellowship, fun, and support of a wonderful organization all wrapped up in one.”

Join us at The ParTee on Monday, October 12 at Memorial Park Golf Course, right after play wraps. Think great food and drinks, a live and silent auction, a raffle, and the chance to meet this year's honorees, Steve Elkington and Rudy Tomjanovich.

Every dollar raised helps CanCare connect people facing cancer with a trained survivor or caregiver who has walked the same road — free, one-to-one support so no one faces cancer alone.

Houston knows him as Rudy T, the heart behind the Rockets' back-to-back championships and the coach who led Team USA to Olympic gold. But Rudy's toughest opponent didn't come on the court. As a bladder cancer survivor, he knows firsthand what it means to face a diagnosis and keep pushing forward.

How do you find hope when cancer leaves you feeling completely alone?"

It's a question a lot of people never say out loud. Cancer is hard enough with people around you, but facing it without them is something else entirely.

In this episode, we sat down with Galina Slavova — former judo champion, actress, model, author, and breast cancer survivor. Born in Bulgaria, she rebuilt her life in the United States. Then in 2023, a breast cancer diagnosis asked something different of her, and she faced treatment far from her family, without the support she needed. So she found her community among other survivors and is now working on a documentary to highlight other cancer journeys.

In this conversation:
1. Finding strength beyond survival.
2. Rebuilding identity when your body and life change.
3. Why peer connection offers something even family cannot.
4. Turning pain into purpose for the person walking behind you.
