Nearly 100 bus workers at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston have voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 988. The new Teamsters work for joint employers, Transdev Transportation and REM Services, and provide transportation for the airport’s rental car center.

“We saw what other bus workers got as Teamsters, and we knew we knew we needed to join,” said Lester Sneed, a bus operator and new Teamster. “Our unanimous decision to form a union sends a clear message that we will no longer put up with the status quo. We are looking forward to getting our first ever Teamsters contract that addresses the changes we need.”

Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien has authorized enhanced out-of-work benefits for the 76 Pepsi Drivers in Houston, strengthening their fight for a fair contract.

These hardworking men and women would receive $1,000 per week in strike benefits—an investment by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to help level the playing field against a corporate giant like Pepsi.

With this support, the Drivers can stand strong in their demand for fair wages, better benefits, improved working conditions, and an end to management mistreatment.

They are prepared to take to the streets if necessary, and the Teamsters stand ready with them.

We urge Pepsi to come to the table with a fair and respectful offer to avoid a strike and do right by the workers who keep their business running.

Teamsters Local 988 proudly endorses Christian Menefee in his bid for Texas’s 18th District congressional seat. As the top civil attorney for Harris County government, Menefee believes working families need a fighter in Congress. For Harris County, he frequently challenged the state’s top Republican leaders, including the fight for voting rights and against Republican attempts to exert greater state control over local Democratic governance. His ability to consistently take up the fight against our state’s leadership is proof that he is ready to advance to Washington.

Christian Menefee was raised in Texas’s 18th Congressional District by two military parents who taught him the values of service, hard work, and standing up for what’s right. Menefee believes every worker deserves fair pay, a safe workplace, and the freedom to organize. As Harris County’s chief civil lawyer, he required OSHA safety training for county contractors, supported apprenticeship programs, and pushed for a livable wage. In Congress, he will fight to expand paid family leave, raise the minimum wage, and ensure access to training programs. Menefee knows strong unions build strong communities and will always stand up for those who power our economy.

Teamsters Local 988 strongly urges its over 1,800 members residing in CD18 to vote for Christian Menefee as he has and will continue to back the working class in our fight against corporate greed.

On Saturday afternoon, PepsiCo Drivers voted down the heinous, egregious contract offered by the company and unanimously approved a Strike Authorization. These essential workers are the backbone of PepsiCo’s operations in Houston, yet the company continues to demonstrate that they are focused on putting profits over people. These drivers deserve a strong contract that respects the hard work that they do day in and day out, and compensates them for not receiving wage increases for almost three years. The Drivers are prepared to put it all on the line by going on strike until they get the contract they deserve.
