Your Old Mattress Can Change Lives

Houston sends an estimated 700,000 mattresses to landfills every year.

At Houston Furniture Bank, we’re helping change that.

Through our mattress recycling and restoration program, old mattresses are:
♻️ Recycled responsibly
🛏 Restored for families in need
💼 Used to create workforce opportunities
🌎 Kept out of local landfills

This mission creates impact on every level:
For families.
For the environment.
For our city.

When you donate a mattress, you’re helping provide safe sleep while supporting a cleaner, more sustainable Houston.

One donation can do a lot of good.

A Bed Changes Everything

More than 300,000 children in the Greater Houston area are sleeping without a bed tonight.

A mattress may seem simple, but to a child, it means comfort. Stability. Safety. Better sleep. Better focus in school. A space that finally feels like their own.

Through our No Kids Sleep on the Floor initiative, Houston families receive more than furniture; they receive dignity, hope, and a foundation to move forward.

For many families rebuilding after hardship, a furnished home is the first step toward lasting stability.

You can help change that.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice reminds us of the importance of community, compassion, and caring for one another.

At Houston Furniture Bank, we believe one of the most meaningful ways to honor that legacy is through service; helping families rebuild, supporting veterans in need, and ensuring every child has a safe place to sleep.

As we gather with loved ones this Memorial Day, we remember those who made that freedom possible and extend our gratitude to the families who carry their legacy forward.

From all of us at Houston Furniture Bank:
Thank you. We remember. ❤️

You do not have to change the whole world to change someone’s world.

Not everyone can donate thousands of dollars.
Not everyone has a truck full of furniture.

But everyone has something they can give.

🛏️ Build a bed
🍲 Cook a meal
🧶 Crochet a blanket
🌱 Mow a lawn
🚚 Help move furniture
🔨 Repair a table
🧸 Donate gently used items
⏰ Volunteer your time
💵 Support with resources if you can

Every skill matters.
Every act of kindness matters.
Every person has the ability to help a family feel seen, supported, and at home again.

At The Furniture Bank, we believe community is built through people showing up for one another; using whatever gifts they have to help turn empty houses into homes.

You don’t have to do everything.
You just have to do something.

Together, we can make sure no child sleeps on the floor.

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month

This month, we recognize the children, youth, foster families, kinship caregivers, caseworkers, advocates, mentors, and community partners who work every day to create safer, more stable futures for families across Houston.

Across the United States, hundreds of thousands of children and youth are currently in foster care, and many young people age out of the system each year without permanent family connections.

At The Furniture Bank, we see how something as simple as a bed, dining table, or furnished room can help restore dignity, comfort, stability, and hope during times of transition.

Many children entering foster or kinship care arrive with very little; while grandparents, relatives, neighbors, and caregivers step in overnight to provide safety and love.

A safe place to sleep matters.
A supportive community matters.
Connection matters.

This month, we honor the organizations and individuals helping families heal, stay together, and move forward, including incredible partners like The Riverside Project, who remind us that healing happens through relationships and community support.

Because every child deserves:
💙 Safety
💙 Stability
💙 Comfort
💙 A place to call home

This Foster Care Awareness Month, we’re honored to spotlight our incredible partner agency, The Riverside Project; an organization working every day to support foster youth, kinship families, biological families, and vulnerable children across Houston.

Together, we’re reminded that healing doesn’t happen alone.

Sometimes it starts with a bed.
A dining table.
A safe place to land.
A community willing to show up.

In our upcoming newsletter feature, The Riverside Project shares powerful insight into the realities families face and the importance of connection, dignity, and access to resources.

“Children end up in care not because of intentional abuse or neglect, but more as a lack of resources or community.”

Thank you to the Riverside Project for the life-changing work you do and for trusting The Furniture Bank to help turn empty houses into homes for families rebuilding after crisis.

Because every child deserves stability.
Every family deserves dignity.
And no kid should sleep on the floor.

“If everybody is doing a little bit of something… we can heal Houston.”
