GUEST SPEAKER
Donovan Garcia is a native of Jeanerette and has lived in St. Mary Parish since 1977. He retired from CLECO in 2013. Some say Donovan was born to paddle. At age 12, he explored the bayous in a pirogue built by his grandfather which he still has. His love of paddling has continued throughout his lifetime, and he eventually tried different types of boats, settling in recent years on kayaking. He has designed all the Cajun Coast paddling trails and Bayou Teche National Wildlife paddling trails. In 2004, he became a founding member of the Friends of Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge and is still a current board member. He designed most of the hiking trails on the refuge, one of which was nationally recognized. In 2022, Donovan was asked to help with the
expansion of the Bayou Teche Wildlife Refuge. This project became known as the Wildflower
Energy Project. He is currently documenting flowering plants on the refuge and has found some rare plants. His talk will include the history of the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, the Wildflower Energy Project and transforming the pipelines and rights-of-way on the refuge to benefit wildlife.
