While trick or treating... would you roast an eyeball or take the candy? 👁️🔥

Around 500 kids hiked Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands' "Trail of Heads" past a sleeping Bigfoot and a skeleton to this mock campfire at Chadron State Park's Trunk-or-Treat.

Only a couple chose the pretend eyeballs. Most took the candy. To each their own.

BHPFA supplied the candy for the event thanks to our "sweet" customers and members. Happy Halloween from western Nebraska's public lands community!

Are you batty for bats? Bat Week runs through Halloween night, and so does 15% off our bat favorites.

The 8-inch bat plush is down to $11.89. For the grown-up bat fans, the little brown bat earrings are now just $15.29.

Sale prices are already live on the site, so there's no code to remember.

Jewel Cave's bats are the public faces of the week, but bats live throughout our forest and park partner locations. Buying bat merch from BHPFA helps fund research and protection for real bats!

Bat Weeks sale ends October 31: blackhillsparks.org/bat-weeks/

The National Park Foundation awarded BHPFA a "Field Science" grant! It lets us continue our awesome partnership with Sturgis Library and other organizations in the Black Hills to bring kids to Wind Cave to work with natural resource professionals. Last year, the Dragonfly Monitoring program was a hit with the kids and the staff. We look forward to seeing what our education team and Wind Cave staff come up with next!

The grant gives free programming to middle and high school kids in Sturgis

Wednesday nights are BINGO NIGHT!
Starting Oct. 21, 20% of bingo sales at The Custer Beacon go to BHPFA.

We're the Beacon's featured bingo beneficiary through Dec. 9. Most of the card money goes back into the games: 60% funds round prizes, and another 20% builds the progressive jackpots. BHPFA's 20% supports parks and forests across the Black Hills and Nebraska.

Games start at 6:30 p.m. sharp at 351 Washington St. A 10-card pack is $10. Bring cash (no debit or credit), and come early if you want a seat.

It's never too early to think about the holiday season. Well... actually it can be too early (glares in direction of the big box stores where decor has been on sale since April).

But since it's already pumpkin spice season, we can tell you Scotts Bluff National Monument is a 2026 Nebraska Holiday Passport stop.

Visit Nebraska announced 24 stops this week, including this fascinating monument in Gering. Visit the stops and collect stamps in your booklet from November 13, 2026 through January 10, 2027.

They say each National Park site has its own unique flavor.

Might be true, because Barbara says Guadalupe Mountains National Park (Western Texas) tastes amazing.

She bought the "NatGeo National Parks Cookbook" form our Wind Cave store and baked the cherry-chipotle brownies that represent that unique environment.

Swipe for a closer look at the recipe she tried.

Heading to the Pinnacles camping area near Wall this fall? Use a designated site on the west side of Forest Service Roads 7158 and 7170. The east side, closer to the edge, is closed to camping.

A Forest Service order covers the east side of both roads and their spurs at Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Camping there is prohibited unless you're in a developed campground or a designated dispersed site. The order took effect Aug. 15 and runs through Dec. 15, 2027 unless it's rescinded earlier. The camping area itself is still open, so follow the signs and the order's map when you get there.

Strong west winds are a big part of "why." The Forest Service says wind has blown several camping setups over that unstable edge in recent years, and many of the folks who camp there are from out of town and don't know how hard it blows.

The photos are from 2025, when volunteers working with BHPFA and the Forest Service built log fencing and barriers at the Pinnacles to try to help keep our visitors and local campers safe.

Questions go to the Wall Ranger District at 605-279-2126. Please share this with anyone planning a trip out there.
