Porter County Health Department making AUTISM ELOPEMENT KITS available to eligible applicants

The Porter County Health Department (PCHD) is making Autism Elopement Kits available to the eligible parents or guardians.

WHAT IS ELOPEMENT?

Wandering/elopement is the tendency for an individual to leave the safety of a responsible person’s care or safe area. While it is common and short-lived in toddlers, it may also persist or re-emerge later in those autism. Approximately 50 percent of children with autism have engaged in elopement behavior, leaving them vulnerable to dangerous situations.

WHY DOES PCHD MAKE THESE KITS?

PCHD staff have had personal experience dealing with the elopement of loved ones and so created the Autism Elopement Kit to equip families with a combination of strategies that focus on supervision, environmental adjustments, communication skills, and safety training that will prevent elopement.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

*Autism elopement prevent tips and fact sheet.
*Exterior door locks.
*Window alarms.
*Tile tracking device.
*Wearable Tile band.
*Social stories.
*Visual aids.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

*Parents or guardians of a child with a formal autism diagnosis.
*Child has a history of elopement.
*Families residing in Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski, Starke, and Benton counties.

November 17th is Organization Day, the day Indiana lawmakers gather at the Statehouse to prepare for the upcoming legislative session. That means all 150 members of the Indiana General Assembly will be there. And we need the disability community there too.
