Before the storm CSH initiated the installation of two native pollinator gardens on each side of the Oak Savanna Trail where it crosses Wisconsin Street. We partnered with Lake County Parks and staff from the City of Hobart to prepare the two areas by mowing the grass very low, covering it with cardboard, then adding 4 inches of wood mulch. We are grateful for the mulch that was donated by Lake Counry Parks and the volunteer labor from the City Of Hobart staff and our members. CSH will provide over 200 plants for this project. We will be planting the area in early October, so stay tuned if you would like to help us plant. This project will beautify the trail crossing, showcase locally native plants, and add vital pollinator habitat to our city.

Come learn about the environmental problems and other issues associated with single use plastics.

♻️🌎Join the Lake County Solid Waste Management District for The Plastic Problem: How We Got Here and What Comes Next on Tuesday August 25 from 1–2 p.m. at the Crown Point Library!

This presentation will explore the history and rise of single-use plastics, their environmental impacts, and practical alternatives that can help reduce plastic waste in everyday life.

As part of our Bag of Bags campaign, we’ll also share simple ways to make reusable bags part of your everyday shopping routine—Every Store, All the Time! Attendees will receive free reusable bags to help put that habit into practice.

The recent photos below show the initial results of restoration at the Stewart Mattix Prairie after removing many invasive shrubs this winter in about half of the 22 acre prairie. This tallgrass prairie remnant is coming back to life and is currently full of wildflowers including some uncommon prairie plants (not pictured) that haven't been seen here for at least the past 10 years. Last summer the areas pictured below had very few if any wildflowers due to an over abundance of non-native shrubs and trees. We hope to remove additional areas of woody growth later this year. We are grateful for the support from the School City of Hobart for seeing the importance of restoring their prairie to benefit nature and to serve as an outdoor classroom.

Tallgrass prairies once stretched from Indiana to the Great Plains and are some of the rarest ecosystems on our planet. The extensive root systems of tallgrass prairie plants enrich soils, store a lot of Carbon, and absorb and retain moisture. Prairie plants provide vital habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. This ecosystem thrives when there is little to no woody growth such as trees and shrubs. So, our current goal is to remove as much woody growth as possible over the next couple of years. We hope that you are inspired to plant native prairie plants around your home and in your community. The more tallgrass habitat we create in the areas in which we live the more wildlife can prosper.

Suppressing Mosquitos Naturally

Even though the current wildlfire smoke does a great job at suppressing mosquitos we still want to share some eco-friendly ways to minimize mosquitos (after the smoke has cleared) to help ensure they are not breeding near your home and to deter them from biting you.

Growing certain potted plants on your porch is a good way to repel them. Better yet when you're outside, take a leaf or two of these plants and rub it on your skin. (Try a small area first to check for sensitivity.) Additionally, mosquito larvae need standing water, like stagnant bird baths, plant saucers, and anywhere it collects. Change bird bath water often and drain other locations where water collects. Click on the images below on specifics.

It's Plastic Free July. We know it's very difficult to eliminate plastic use, so this month is about finding ways to reduce your plastic consumption and possibly eliminate it in certain areas of your life. We ask you to take the time to mindfully consider actions to see where you can reduce plastic use indefinitely. Each one of us has a role in this effort and it begins with you.
