We're excited to share that our own Matt Valuckis has been named to the Stonewall Dems of NWI steering committee!

WHY DO PRIMARY ELECTIONS MATTER?

Every November, we complain that we only get two choices when there are millions of people in the county to pick from.

Here's the kicker: We can pick from more than those 2 people. But currently only about 25% of us decide to pick.

That's what the primary election is for.

Think of it like the Democrats are American Idol and Republicans are The Voice. Each party runs its own show, narrowing the field down to a single winner. In November, those two winners face off and the rest of us pick between them. But the primary is where the real shaping happens.

That's also why the ballot works the way it does. When you walk into the polls in May, you pick one side: Democratic or Republican. No mixing and matching–each party is choosing its own contender.

And yet ~25% of eligible voters show up in May, compared to ~65% in November. The election with the most influence over your options gets the least attention.

That's why 4634You exists–to help Hobart understand who's running, what those offices actually do, and why your vote in May matters just as much as your vote in November.

To follow up with our last post about 15% of Hobart showing up to vote, voter numbers HAVE gone up overall and that's something to celebrate. Over 360,000 Hoosiers voted in the 2026 primary.

Take a look at the 2026 primary by the numbers.

Matt from 4634You here. This past Tuesday was Indiana's primary election. According to the Lake County Board of Elections, Hobart has 20,485 registered voters. Only 3,194 of them voted. That's 15.59%. We didn't show up. And we should have.

I ran for Precinct Committeeperson in HO16. I didn't win, but I knocked on more than 250 doors while canvassing, and what I heard gave me hope. People told me they want change. They want to know what's happening in Hobart. They were glad someone showed up at their door.

But on Tuesday, most of them didn't show up at the polls. Why? What kept you from voting in the primary? Didn't know the candidates? Didn't think it mattered? Was it something else?

We can't be the change if we don't show up.
