Today is June 17th, which makes it National Garbage Man Appreciation Day! Here at Drive Clean Indiana, we greatly appreciate all of our members who work in the sanitation industry.

Additionally, Drive Clean Indiana was able to help the City of Whiting, Indiana, procure two LPG-powered (liquified petroleum gas) garbage trucks. We are thankful for communities like Whiting, who are looking to implement more alternative fuels into their sanitation industry!

🌉 25+ YEARS IN THE MAKING... THE RIBBON IS READY TO CUT!

Today, the Town of Highland, Indiana, and the Town of Munster, Indiana, will celebrate the completion of the Bridges over Ditches project — a trail connection that local leaders and residents have been working toward for decades.

Originally envisioned more than 25 years ago, the Highland Munster Pathway took years of coordination and planning to become a reality. Funding for the project was first secured in 2008 through Transportation Enhancement grants administered by the Indiana Department of Transportation in partnership with the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission. After years of navigating utility corridors, pipelines, and drainage infrastructure, the project officially broke ground in September 2025.

Today, the completed pathway connects the Pennsy Greenway and Erie Lackawanna Trail, creating a safer, more accessible route between Highland and Munster while strengthening regional trail connectivity across Northwest Indiana.

🌤We had a blast celebrating another year of Partners for Clean Air -Northwest Indiana at the Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon. Drive Clean Indiana was honored to be presented with the 2026 Partners for Clean Air Community Award alongside the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission for our joint work on the Indiana Green Fleet Program.

Additionally, we are proud of all our members who were honored with awards today, including Ozinga, the East Chicago Public Works Department , the Town of New Chicago, and GPTC. Our air quality progress in Northwest Indiana is only possible because of leaders like you!

🎉Congratulations to Wa-Nee Community Schools on their transition to propane-powered school buses and to Transpo - South Bend Public Transportation Corporation for its continued leadership with compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses!

These projects demonstrate how alternative fuels are delivering real benefits in the Michiana Area Council of Governments region and across Indiana—helping fleets reduce operating costs, improve energy security, and lower emissions while maintaining reliable transportation services for students and communities.

We’re especially proud that both the Wa-Nee propane school bus initiative and South Bend Transpo’s CNG bus program are Drive Clean Indiana projects. Together, they showcase how cleaner transportation solutions can work across a variety of fleet applications, creating economic and environmental benefits throughout our region.

Bus operators across Michiana are saving money by switching from diesel to propane-powered buses as fuel prices rise nationwide.
