MHAAT 360° Framework | Know Your Numbers

Knowing your blood pressure numbers during pregnancy and in the postpartum period matters. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) notes that high blood pressure can increase the risk of serious complications, including preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders during and after pregnancy, and can also increase your long-term cardiovascular risk.

For pregnant and postpartum mothers, a blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher is considered high. A reading of 160/110 or higher is considered severely high and needs urgent medical evaluation.

Knowing your numbers is important. Knowing the warning signs is equally important.

Possible warning signs include:

⚠️ Severe or persistent headache

⚠️ Changes in vision, including blurred vision or seeing spots

⚠️ Shortness of breath

⚠️ Chest pain

⚠️ Severe swelling of the face, hands, or feet

⚠️ Severe pain in the upper abdomen

⚠️ Feeling unusually unwell or experiencing symptoms that concern you

If you experience any of these warning signs, contact your healthcare provider immediately. If symptoms are severe, worsening, or accompanied by a blood pressure reading of 160/110 or higher, seek emergency medical care.

Mothers know their bodies. If something feels unusual, worsening, or concerning, do not hesitate to speak up and seek care.

Within the MHAAT 360° Framework, awareness is a form of advocacy.

Know your numbers.

Know the warning signs.

Trust your instincts.

Seek medical attention when concerns arise.

Small actions can make a meaningful difference.

⚖️ The MHAAT Framework | Father’s Day Reflection

Honoring Fathers. Strengthening Families.

Men are essential to maternal health, family well-being, and thriving communities.

Behind every healthy mother is a network of love, support, partnership, and care. Fathers and male partners can play a vital role in promoting maternal well-being and healthy family outcomes.

THE HEART AND THE KIDNEYS: A REFLECTION ON PARTNERSHIP

In the Old Testament, the heart and kidneys are often mentioned together as symbols of the inner person—our thoughts, emotions, intentions, and deepest motivations.

Just as the heart and kidneys work together to sustain life, healthy, supportive relationships help create the conditions for mothers, infants, and families to thrive.

The heart reminds us of love, compassion, connection, and courage.

The kidneys remind us of discernment, reflection, balance, and care for what is happening beneath the surface.

Neither works alone. Each contributes to the well-being of the whole.

Likewise, maternal health is strengthened when mothers are supported by engaged fathers, caring partners, involved families, and healthy communities.

To Fathers and Men:

Your presence matters.
Your partnership matters.
Your support matters.

When you listen, encourage, advocate, share responsibilities, and stand beside the mother of your children, you help create an environment where mothers, infants, and families can flourish.

This Father’s Day, we honor fathers, grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers, mentors, coaches, spiritual fathers, and all men who help nurture, protect, and strengthen families and communities.

At MHAAT, we recognize that strong support systems come in many forms. Every mother deserves to be surrounded by people who value her dignity, support her well-being, and contribute to the health of her family and community.

Grounded in the Body.
Guided by the Mother.
Centered in Dignity.
Driven by Justice.

🌿 Freedom to Rest: A Juneteenth and Shabbat Reflection

As we commemorate Juneteenth and prepare to welcome Shabbat at sundown, we are reminded that freedom is more than liberation from physical bo***ge. Freedom is also the opportunity to rest, heal, reflect, and reclaim our humanity.

In the Old Testament, the Most High searches the heart and tests the kidneys—the innermost places of thought, emotion, and intention. Today, this ancient imagery invites us to consider the whole person.

For mothers, caregivers, families, and communities, true well-being requires more than surviving. It requires space to breathe, to be heard, to be valued, and to rest.

At MHAAT, we believe that dignity-centered care begins by recognizing the humanity of every mother. Just as the body depends upon the heart and kidneys to sustain life, healthy communities depend upon justice, compassion, and care to sustain hope.

This Juneteenth, may we celebrate freedom.
This Shabbat, may we embrace rest.
And every day, may we continue the work of creating conditions where mothers, infants, and families can thrive.

Grounded in the Body.
Guided by the Mother.
Centered in Dignity.
Driven by Justice.

MHAAT 360° Framework | Whole Food Wellness

What we eat matters during pregnancy.

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, eggs, and lean proteins supports maternal health and fetal development. Prenatal vitamins and safe food handling, including avoiding unpasteurized dairy, raw seafood, and undercooked meats and eggs, are also important. Many of these nutrient-rich foods are considered whole foods and form the foundation of a healthy pregnancy.

Whole foods are foods found in or close to their natural form. Many believe these foods are created by the Source of Life to nourish the body.

Examples of whole foods include:

🍎 Fruits such as apples, berries, oranges, and bananas

🥦 Vegetables such as leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, and sweet potatoes

🌾 Whole grains such as oats, brown rice, and quinoa

🫘 Beans, lentils, and peas

🥜 Nuts and seeds

🥚 Eggs and lean proteins

These foods provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that support healthy pregnancy and maternal wellness.

Within the MHAAT 360° Framework, nourishment is not about perfection. It is about making small intentional choices that honor the body carrying life.

Small intentional choices matter.

Choose foods that nourish.
Choose foods that sustain.
Choose foods that support life.

Whole food wellness matters.

Sacred Sunday Moments
Culture Matters | Walking Together

Long before maternal health became a field of study, women walked together.

They walked through pregnancy, birth, and motherhood supported by mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends, midwives, and community. These relationships offered more than companionship—they offered wisdom, comfort, protection, and care.

Pregnancy is not only a physical journey. It is also an emotional, social, and cultural experience.

Today, doulas continue this tradition of support. Family members, friends, and communities remain important sources of encouragement and connection for mothers during pregnancy and beyond.

Walking together reminds us that maternal health is not experienced in isolation. It is shaped by relationships, communities, and systems of care.

As we move through life, may we remember that no mother should walk alone.

MHAAT 360° Framework | Movement Matters

Movement matters during pregnancy.

For many pregnant people, walking is one of the safest and most accessible ways to support physical and emotional well-being throughout pregnancy. ACOG recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, which can look like a 30-minute walk five days a week.

Small intentional choices matter.

A few steps matter.

Thirty minutes can make a difference.

Movement matters.

💜 Sacred Saturday Moments

The MHAAT Framework | No Mother Should Walk Alone

⚖️ Balance • Justice • Dignity

Some journeys were never meant to be walked alone.

Whether it is a trusted friend, sister, mother, partner, elder, or doula, the presence of a caring companion can make all the difference during life’s most meaningful moments.

For generations, women have leaned on one another for wisdom, comfort, encouragement, and strength. Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are no exception.

Today, doulas often embody the very qualities we cherish in our closest friendships—a steady presence, a listening ear, a reassuring voice, and unwavering support. During pregnancy and birth, they walk alongside mothers, helping them feel informed, respected, encouraged, and never alone. In many ways, doulas remind us of an enduring truth: the journey into motherhood is strengthened when a trusted companion walks beside us.

At MHAAT, we believe every mother deserves someone in her corner—someone who helps her feel seen, heard, valued, and supported.

Because sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is simply our presence.

A friend beside you can remind you of your strength when you momentarily forget.

Reflection Question:
Who has been that steady presence in your life during a challenging season—and how did their support make a difference?

🩺💜 Teach & Transform Tuesday | Take 5 Before You Check

Did you know that how you feel before taking your blood pressure can influence your reading?

Before checking your numbers, pause for 5 minutes.

Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm at heart level. Allow your body and mind a moment to settle.

Why does this matter?

When we are rushing, stressed, talking, moving, or feeling anxious, a brief period of stillness allows our bodies to settle and may provide a truer picture of what our blood pressure is telling us.

At MHAAT™, we call this "Taking 5."

Five minutes of stillness.
Five minutes of absolutely nothing.
Five minutes of honoring your body before measuring it.

Because every number tells a story—and the most accurate story begins with a moment of balance.

Today's Practice:

Before your next blood pressure check, take five minutes to just be, to settle and center yourself.

Your body deserves that pause.
