Half a century of history, unlocked! 🇺🇸

On October 28th, the VFW 4th District gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in North Riverside to officially open our 50-year time capsule. It was an unforgettable day honoring the comrades who came before us and celebrating the proud history of the Fearless Fourth.

Thank you to Department Commander Rob Bailey and Past Department Commander Brett Nila and the rest of the Veterans for joining us on this momentous occasion. Thank you to The Mayor of North Riverside Joseph Mengoni, North Riverside Director of Public Works Vince Ranieri, and both North Riverside and Westchester Public Works for all the assistance you have provided. VETERANS RESOURCE FAIR – NOVEMBER 7, 2026

Veterans and their families are encouraged to attend the upcoming Leyden Township Veterans Resource Fair!

This event is an opportunity to connect directly with organizations and representatives who provide assistance, information, and resources to our veteran community.

Resources and assistance will include:

- VA disability benefits and claims assistance
- VA healthcare enrollment and eligibility
- Federal, state, and local veterans benefits
- Community programs and support services
- One-on-one assistance with knowledgeable representatives

You do NOT need to be a Leyden Township resident to attend!

Whether you have questions about your benefits, need assistance navigating available services, or simply want to learn what resources are out there, this is a great opportunity.

Please share this information with fellow veterans and their families. You never know who may need these resources or who could benefit from attending.

Tomorrow is the Day!!

YEARS OF HISTORY — A MONUMENTAL MOMENT FOR VFW ILLINOIS DISTRICT 4!

On November 7, 1976, members of VFW Illinois District 4 came together to preserve a piece of our history by burying a time capsule, with the intention that it would be opened 50 years later.

At the time, District 4 was under the leadership of Commander George R. Cramer (1976–1977), who would later serve as VFW National Commander-in-Chief from 1993–1994.

What makes this occasion even more remarkable is that three District 4 members who were present 50 years ago will be joining us for this historic opening!

This is more than opening a time capsule. It is an opportunity to honor the veterans who came before us, recognize their dedication to our organization, and connect generations of VFW members through 50 years of history.

The discussion will focus on the Deep Dive Report on Su***de in the Veteran Community — an incredibly important issue affecting Veterans, their families, and our communities.

🇺🇸 District 4 — Mark Your Calendars!

On Saturday, October 17, the Cook County Military and Veterans Resource Fair will be held at Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s Discovery Center from 11:00 AM–3:00 PM.

This event brings together organizations and resources serving Veterans, service members, military families, caregivers, and Gold Star families throughout Cook County.

We’re also excited to share that the Chicagoland Young Marines will have a table at the event! Stop by, meet their Adult Volunteers and some of their Young Marines, and learn more about this youth program and the opportunities it provides for young people in our community.

VFW Post 5979 recently showed its support for the Chicagoland Young Marines with a $500 youth program donation, another great example of Veterans continuing to invest in and mentor the next generation. 🇺🇸❤️

There will be dozens of participating organizations providing information on Veterans benefits, legal assistance, employment, healthcare, education, community programs, and much more.

🏈 Community. Veterans. Coming Together. 🏈

Last night, VFW Post 2868 had the pleasure of hosting the Riverside Brookfield football team for dinner at our Post

We had a great evening spending time with these young men, but they also surprised us with a very special gift — a football helmet with 2868 proudly displayed on the side.

This is what community is about. Bringing generations together, building relationships, and giving our young people an opportunity to spend time with the veterans who served before them.

To the players, coaches, and everyone from Riverside Brookfield — thank you for spending the evening with us and for this incredible gift. It will have a special place at Post 2868.

We are proud to support our local youth, just as we are grateful when our community supports its veterans. 🇺🇸
