As we celebrated with the state when the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup this week, we began looking at the team as a whole. In law enforcement, in order to bring justice to crime or help the Medical Examiner determine natural cause of death or other matters, there are many players on the team. Crime Lab or Forensics is a big teammate. When we say we support the High Point Police Department, every team member is included. Thank you, Forensic Team, for all you do!

Back the Blue doesn’t mean that if you back law enforcement then you’re against another.

It means we support the men and women who choose to serve and protect our community.

It means we hope the community will aid them in sharing information, calling 911, or contacting Crime Stoppers which will help make our area more safe and bring justice to victims.

It means we care.

So, here it is Monday and it’s hot and we are backing the blue and grateful for each person serving well.

UPDATE (June 10, 2026) - Officers with the High Point Police Department’s Traffic Unit arrested and charged a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a five-year-old boy last week.

Officers arrested Jeremiah J. Benton (B/M, 25 of Winston-Salem) this morning at a home in Winston-Salem. He is charged with felony hit and run causing serious injury or death. He is currently in the Guilford County Jail (High Point). His bond is set at $1 million secured.

The High Point Police Department is sharing a photo of a car involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a five-year-old boy on Friday. Investigators with the Traffic Unit are working to identify the driver and the car.

Investigators have narrowed the vehicle description to a gray Ford Focus, believed to be from model years 2015-2018. Anyone with information is asked to call the High Point Police Department at 336-883-3224 or contact Crimestoppers of High Point by downloading the P3 Tips app or calling 336-889-4000.

Officers responded to the intersection of E. Russell Avenue and Hines Street around 5 p.m. on Friday. They found a five-year-old boy who had been hit by a car. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

HIGH POINT, N.C. (June 5, 2026) – Detectives with the High Point Police Department’s Traffic Unit need the community’s help to identify the driver and vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a five-year-old boy.

Shortly before 5 p.m., High Point 911 received a call about someone lying in the road near the intersection of E. Russell Avenue and Hines Street. The High Point Police Department, the High Point Fire Department and Guilford County EMS responded to the scene. They found a five-year-old boy who had been hit by a car. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

The driver left the scene, but investigators believe the suspect’s vehicle is a gray Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta, possibly from model years 2012-2018. Anyone with information is asked to call 336-883-3224 or contact Crimestoppers of High Point by downloading the P3 Tips app or calling 336-889-4000.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has forever changed the lives of a family and impacted our community. A five-year-old child lost his life, and the person responsible made the decision to leave the scene rather than stop and help,” said Chief Curtis Cheeks III. “To the driver involved, I am asking you to do the right thing. Accidents happen, but the choices we make afterward define our character.

“Our investigators will continue to pursue every lead and use every available resource to identify those responsible. However, there is still an opportunity for the driver to come forward and take responsibility for their actions. I urge anyone with information, and especially the individual involved, to contact law enforcement immediately.”

Congratulations to Detective Manzo, who was recently presented with the Greensboro Police Department's Chief's Award. He is currently assigned to the High Point Police Department's Street Crimes Unit.

Detective Manzo was honored for his partnership and commitment to public safety across the region. He is known as a trusted and reliable collaborator who goes above and beyond to support investigations ranging from violent crime to fugitive apprehension.
