🌶️🔥 THINK YOUR CHILI HAS WHAT IT TAKES? 🔥🌶️

The El Kahir Shrine is proud to host the 41st Annual Iowa State Chili Championship on Saturday, August 22, 2026!

This isn't just another cook-off—it's your chance to compete against some of the best chili cooks in the Midwest and earn a spot on the biggest stage in chili cooking!

🏆 The Iowa State Champion automatically qualifies to compete at the World Championship Chili Cookoff in Terlingua, Texas!

👨‍🍳 Never cooked in a chili competition before? No problem!
The public is invited to cook, and we'd love to have new competitors join us.

What to expect:
✅ Setup begins around 8:00 AM
✅ Cooks Meeting at 10:00 AM
✅ Start cooking after the meeting
✅ Chili Turn-In at 1:00 PM

What you'll need:
🌶️ Your chili ingredients
🔥 Camp stove or cooking burner
🍴 Cooking utensils
🪑 Tables and chairs
⛺ EZ-Up canopy (recommended)

All competitors must follow official CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) rules.

🌶️ Chili Entry: $25
🫑 Salsa Entry: $10
👨‍🍳 Jr. Chili Entry: $5

We are proud to display this statue at El Kahir Shrine as a reminder of our mission: helping children, supporting families, and making a difference through brotherhood and service.

Do you know the story behind the statue seen at Shriners Chidren's and Shriners International buildings?

The story goes back to a Hadi Shriners picnic 56 years ago in Evansville, Indiana, where a Shriner named Al Hortman picked up little Bobbi Jo Wright, a patient at Shriners Children’s St. Louis, and helped carry her around for the day. Sunday Courier & Press Photographer Randy Dieter captured this act of kindness on one of the last images on his roll of film. This photo would later inspire the creation of the iconic statue.
