We raise thousands each year to support our libraries, literacy, reading, and education throughout Hermosa Beach and our surrounding communities since 1959!

Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFOL) hosted its official scholarship ceremony, celebrating the exceptional literary talents of South Bay high school students. The HBFOL Scholarship Program awards two $1,000 scholarships to local juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellence in creative writing and historical research.

This year’s recipients are:

Leilani Song - Turning the Page Scholarship (Creative Writing), for her essay “A Different Tune”

Leilani Overton - History & Heritage Scholarship (Story of Community), for her essay “The Man Who Walked on Water”

Their beautiful essays captured the spirit, history, and evolving culture of the Beach Cities. Congratulations to both on winning these scholarships!

The HBFoL Scholarship program is open to 11th and 12th-grade students attending public or private high schools in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, or Redondo Beach (including Mira Costa, Redondo Union, Patricia Dreizler Continuation High School, and Fusion Academy).

A book too good to put down! Join us this Thursday 6/11 at with author for a cozy evening and discussion about her most recent Ohnita Harbor Mystery Series book, the Secrets of the Old Post Cemetery. See you there!

Patricia Crisafulli is an award-winning author with a New York Times Bestseller to her credit. Her first mystery novel, The Secrets of Ohnita Harbor, was published in September 2022 by Woodhall Press, now followed by The Secrets of Still Waters Chasm and The Secrets of the Old Post Cemetery. She earned a master’s in fine arts (MFA) degree from Northwestern University, where she won the distinguished thesis award that became her first novel—and did so at age 52! She has also received awards and distinctions for her short stories. She has been a guest on top-ranked podcasts and has previously been featured on national media, including Bloomberg, CNBC.com, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and more.
