With the national debt at a mind-bending $39 trillion, Washington has already spent roughly $530 billion in interest payments for FY2026. That works out to over $22 billion every week — just to service the debt. In sobering contrast, the Department of Defense had a budget of only $461 billion for that same period.

Over the past six months, in other words, we’ve spent roughly $70 billion more on debt interest than on national defense. Forgive us for sounding like a broken record, but our national debt is slowly — or maybe not so slowly — killing us. It’s a message that bears repeating until lawmakers finally take action to steer our ship of state away from the iceberg.
