The skulls have a secret… they only glow in the dark 💀

💡 Fri, Oct 16 | 5–7 PM: Blacklight Ceramic Skull Painting with Emilio Cortez (Emilio Cortez)
📍 Big Arts, 255 W. Julian St

Paint your own mini ceramic skull in UV-reactive neon acrylics and watch every stroke light up under the black lights. No experience needed, all supplies provided, and all ages welcome. Bring your kids, grandparents, friends and take home a glowing skull that’s all yours. Only 40 spots!

🌙 Come early and step into the Black Light Mural Gallery, open 3–7 PM that same Friday.

🦢 Meet Amy Hibbs (Amy Hibbs), one of this year’s 31 Skulls artists 🦢
 
Amy is one of the local artists bringing Cast the Bones October to life! Come see her piece in person on Friday, October 23rd, and ask her about the story behind her skull.
 
Amy’s skull is inspired by The Swan, the main character in Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of the ballet Swan Lake. In Bourne’s version, The Swan is danced by a sensual, muscular male dancer whose facial markings feel mythic and powerful. This Swan is no victim. He roams freely through a land of imagination and animal power, and Amy’s skull carries that same untamed energy.

Local Color just turned its entire space into a 3-week art experience, with a candlelit room of 31 hand-painted skulls and a gallery glowing under black light.

Downtown San José’s harvest festival turns 30 this year, and it’s all FREE 🧡 Pick the perfect pumpkin, then stay for yoga, folklórico, taiko, a costume parade, live music, and more.
 
🎨 Come find us! Paint FREE pumpkin & leaf ceramics with Jessica Carmen and Local Color volunteers. Grandparents, parents, and little ones can paint side by side and take home a keepsake. It’s our final Golden Steps event, and no registration is needed. Just drop in!

Foam Brush Calligraphy: Spooky Edition with Ben Henderson of Brush House ✍️

You’ve seen Ben’s hand-painted signs all over downtown, and he designed this year’s 31 Skulls: Cast the Bones branding too. This Friday, he’s showing you how he does it.
 
Learn to turn simple foam brushes into bold, large-scale lettering tools, master expressive gothic strokes, and take home your own haunting quote print or vintage-style Halloween sign. All brushes, custom ink blends, heavy cardstock, and guide sheets are provided. Just bring your favorite spooky phrases.
