The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the ISA serves arborists from commercial, utility, and municipal sectors in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington DC.

MAC-ISA offers scholarships, educational programs and networking opportunities for its members. The MAC-ISA is a non-profit membership organization of professional arborists, urban foresters, and others involved in the care of trees. Our members represent commercial, utility, municipal sectors, educational institutions and other related green industry fields. Our mission is to promote a culture of safety while fostering education and research that supports the care and benefits of trees. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter area includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

🌳 Meet our new MAC-ISA Board members!

Please join us in welcoming Reggie West and Micah Hewitson, elected by our membership to serve two-year terms on the Board of Directors!

Reggie West brings experience as the founder of RW Stump Grinding and East Coast Arborist Consulting Services. A Registered Consulting Arborist and ISA Certified Arborist, Reggie specializes in tree risk assessments, tree appraisals, and forensic arboricultural analysis throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Micah Hewitson is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, and TRAQ holder. His work includes tree risk assessments, tree management planning, and plant health care. Passionate about education and mentorship, Micah helps train arborists and advance evidence-based tree care.

👏 Congratulations to Samantha Matson and Aaron Humphries, who were reelected to serve a second two-year term. Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment!

Having my first exhibit at our ISA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Annual Meeting was a wonderful experience.

Presenting Treelign to the community I grew up in was so special.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, and I’m very optimistic about the impact Treelign will have on all of us: our ability to connect, work together, and build new relationships.

Our mission is to cultivate a more collaborative tree care industry. Growing together, for safety and for community.

🌳 Finishing Strong at the 2026 MAC-ISA Annual Meeting!

We wrapped up the final sessions of this year’s Annual Meeting & Trade Show in Fredericksburg! Our 1:15–2:15 p.m. concurrent sessions offer attendees four more opportunities to learn:

⚡ UVM Project Management – What You Don’t Know Could Cost You with Robert Vanderhoof — practical strategies for better planning, project delivery, resource management, and communication in Utility Vegetation Management.

🌱 Soil Remediation Through Soil Profile Rebuilding with Vincent Verweij — exploring innovative methods for restoring compacted and damaged soils and improving long-term landscape performance.

🪵 Building a Sustainable Urban Wood Reuse Program with Sam Doan and Shaun McKim — highlighting how Washington, D.C. is turning removed urban trees into valuable community resources.

🔎 Landscape Pest Walk with Dr. Pat Wooden and Andy Shorter — a hands-on tour focused on pest identification and informed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) decisions.

🌳 And we’re not done yet! Following the concurrent sessions, we’ll close out our educational program with our final keynote presentation, “It Takes a Village: The Story of the Restoration of Fredericksburg City’s Trees,” featuring Anne Little, Executive Director of Tree Fredericksburg. Anne will share the success stories behind the restoration and continued care of Fredericksburg’s urban forest.

This morning’s concurrent sessions are giving attendees the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics across arboriculture and urban forestry:

A look at recent changes to Maryland legislation affecting forests and tree care, including updates to the Forest Conservation Act, Critical Area laws, comprehensive planning and more.

🔎 Demystifying Diagnostics – Chelsi Abbott
Breaking down plant problem diagnosis into a systematic, step-by-step process and demonstrating how to identify common biotic issues.

🌲 Expanding the BMP Toolkit in Utility Forestry – Seth Blair
Exploring how ISA Best Management Practices can strengthen utility vegetation management, data and inventory management, construction coordination and alignment with broader arboricultural standards.

🐛 Landscape Pest Walk – Dr. Pat Wooden & Andy Shorter
Attendees are heading outside for a hands-on walking tour to learn how to survey for and identify landscape pests and make informed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) decisions.

A great mix of classroom learning and hands-on education as we continue Day 2 in Fredericksburg!

🌳 Day 2 is underway at the MAC-ISA Annual Meeting & Trade Show!

We started the morning with two keynote presentations focused on strengthening the knowledge and professional development of our industry.

🍄 Chelsi Abbott — “Wood Decay Fungi: Biology and Identification”
Attendees explored fungal biology and the characteristics used to identify common parasitic and saprotrophic wood decay fungi, with practical insight into what their presence can mean for tree health, structural stability, and safety.

🎓 Dr. Paul Ries — “Navigating the New Urban Forestry Credentials”
With new urban forestry credentials recently introduced by ISA and SAF, this session examines what these certifications mean for the profession, how they can support career advancement, and strategies for preparing for the credentialing process.

And there’s plenty more ahead today, including concurrent educational sessions, the Trade Show, and opportunities to connect with fellow arboriculture professionals.
