We have one of the most beautiful courthouses in Arkansas, and just look at these floors!

Built in 1909 after the original courthouse burned, the Boone County Courthouse was designed by Charles L. Thompson.

Those beautiful mosaic tiles are just one of its architectural treasures, along with marble stairways and oak woodwork.

It’s been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.

A piece of Harrison history is still visible in the C. L. Glines ghost sign downtown.

Glines opened his jewelry business in Harrison in 1885. By 1905, he reportedly carried the largest stock of high-grade watches in Arkansas and serviced railroad watches across 1,100 miles of the Frisco System.

His shop also sold jewelry, silverware, and optical goods, including some 2,000 pairs of lenses!

Somebody’s got to stock those shelves!

Before customers walk through the doors, deliveries are being made and businesses are getting ready for the day.

It’s another part of the everyday activity that keeps downtown Harrison moving.

There are people opening businesses. People restoring old buildings. People serving lunch, pouring coffee, cutting hair, selling things, making things, creating things and helping people.

There are buildings that have been here for more than a century and people investing in what comes next.

There are events, music, art, history and a whole lot of people who care about this place.

Downtown is more than a shopping destination. It’s a community.

And there’s a whole lot happening here.

One of downtown Harrison’s most recognizable buildings has been standing at Main and Rush for more than 120 years. But do you know what was there before it?

In 1904, the answer was… nothing.

The Sanborn map simply noted: “U.S. Gov’t & Post Office Building to be erected.”

From post office to federal courthouse to county offices, the Federal Building has served Harrison in a lot of ways since then.

We dug into its history for this week’s Main Street Harrison blog.
