The North Shore Nordic Association was founded to promote winter use of the regions existing trail ne Help us today by making a donation.

Calling all cross-country skiers and those seeking winter exercise and recreation. Help us bring groomed cross-country skiing to the North Shore of Massachusetts. The North Shore Nordic Association is a 501C3 tax exempt non-profit charitable organization formed by local residents with the goal of working with local land stewards to groom a classical and skate ski lane at Appleton Farms and Grassri

des. Because we are entirely volunteer run, 100% of your contribution goes toward the cost of our operations. With your help, we will continue bringing community ski trail grooming to the North Shore of Massachusetts every winter. NSNA is also seeking to partner with corporate sponsors to fund a portion of our capital campaign.

What does NSNA’s head mechanic do on Memorial Day weekend? How about checking 84 bearings in the UTV tracks and finding that 36 of them need to be replaced? Being prepared to groom trails requires a year-round effort!

World Binturong Day 2026

Why should NSNA followers care? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷Well, our trusty snowmobile is an ArticCat BEARCAT. Still confused? 🤔The Binturong is commonly known as a “Bearcat”! 🐻🐱So, we’re going to jump on the World Binturong Day bandwagon!! Our Bearcat is awesome! 👍👏🙏

This winter’s snow is long gone, but our Trail Crew’s work continues. Our lead mechanic Dan completed some much needed maintenance and then organized a team including Tony, Andy, and Bob to move our equipment to summer storage. Great job everyone!

While the fog hovers and the snow slowly melts away, Groomer Dan does not despair! This year’s surplus of snow took its toll on our equipment and Groomer Dan relishes nothing more than a challenge!

Broken UTV door hinge? No problem, Dan can replace that.

Damaged winch cable. Dan can replace that too, and make it even better with a synthetic rope!

Not-Grooming Report
Saturday, 3/7/26

Unfortunately - and who likes to start any sentence with “unfortunately” - because of yesterday’s rain and last night’s above-freezing temperatures, we weren’t able to groom the trails last night. And, unfortunately (there’s that word again!), we probably won’t be grooming again until temperatures drop below freezing. Which isn’t forecast to happen until late next week.

Why don’t we groom in these conditions? Above freezing, this soft corn snow won’t consolidate: we could form corduroy and tracks, but the first trail users would mush them out. Even worse, the surface snow is so wet, it packs to slush, especially in the tracks. Slush equals minimal glide and fire ice.

So, this snow is still skiable, we just can’t tailor it for our fans.

We will continue to evaluate our options and may try some grooming.

Thursday, 3/5/26

Wednesday night, Groomer Greg cleaned up the trails that Groomer Tony had worked on in the morning! After a cool overnight, the trails should be firm and fast until late morning! Ski on the Lamson Fields and the Plains Loop! Make it a Happy hour!

Wednesday, 3/4/26

Groomer Tony is heading over this morning to try a quick refresh on the East Side main trails with the Ginzu. Yesterday’s potpourri of precipitation combined with freezing then warming temperatures, make for challenging grooming conditions. We’ll see what we can do to make it more skiable!

Grooming Report
Tuesday, 3/3/26

Groomers Aidan and Tony focused on grooming the Bio labs field across Route 1A from . This can be accessed from the soccer field parking lot directly off Rt. 1A. We don’t often have sufficient snow to groom this area, so check out these beautiful fields around the Miles River today! (As this was an initial grooming, the trails look pristine, but may be a bit soft, especially later in the day!)

We started early and we finished late. We saw a sunrise, snowfall, blue sky, and a lingering sunset. We blew a fuse on the snowmobile and we blew a door off the UTV. But we kept going and we pulverized this morning’s hard pack to yield skiable corduroy that should last several days during this cool down.

Groomer Jack, AKA “The Doorbuster”, went out to Cutler, did the CLA Mile twice as well as the fields. He also did Prince of Wales and the Goodhue, Waldingfield and connector route.

In Jack’s estimation, the skiing should be excellent in the morning with the following caveat. The hay truck is coming tomorrow, and we will lose a little bit of groomed area along the roads, actual loss to be determined.

So bundle up on Monday and let us know how Modest Jack’s gourmet grooming suites your Nordic palette!
