Twenty-five years later, how do we teach children about a day they weren’t here to remember?
That question is part of why The Little White Truck With The Big Mission was written.
This award-winning children’s book is based on the true story of a little white truck that traveled to New York and carried a piece of steel from the World Trade Center home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
But the mission became much bigger than the truck.
Over the years, thousands of these books were placed into the hands of children — many personally delivered to classrooms by teams of firefighters, law enforcement officers, military members and veterans through our Books for Bravery program.
The goal was never simply to teach children what happened on September 11, 2001.
It was to help them understand who showed up. Who served. Who sacrificed. And why we remember.
This September 11 feels especially meaningful because I am down to approximately 40–50 copies of The Little White Truck With The Big Mission.
And when these are gone, they’re gone.
There won’t be another printing waiting in the warehouse. These are the final copies of a book that has traveled much farther and touched far more lives than that little white truck ever could have imagined when this journey began.
