IMMS is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicate to education, conservation, research, and rescue of marine mammals and sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (“IMMS”) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1984 for the purposes of public education, conservation, and research on marine mammals and sea turtles in the wild and under human care

. Located in Gulfport, Mississippi, IMMS has been an active participant of the National Stranding Network since its inception. IMMS is the premier stranding organization in the Mississippi-Louisiana-Alabama region of the Gulf Coast with the capability and expertise to care for sick and injured marine mammals. IMMS serves as an important educational outlet for the Mississippi Gulf Coast, incorporating programs for conservation, education and research of marine mammals and their environment. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies serves as a liaison between public and private entities interested in marine mammal science. IMMS has provided funding and facilities to graduate students in order to conduct their research. IMMS has also developed and supervised a marine mammal veterinary preceptorship program for final year veterinary students. Research at IMMS covers a broad range of scientific disciplines including population dynamics, underwater acoustics, health, genetics, microbiology, endocrinology, behavior, biomagnetism and ecology. The Institute has conducted studies in cooperation with scientists from the Mississippi State University--College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Southern Mississippi, Oklahoma State University, Portland State University, University of Miami, University of California, Berkeley, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, National Marine Fisheries Service, Naval Ocean Systems Center, Naval Research Laboratory, Jackson State University and Louisiana State University. Together with its scientific collaborators, IMMS hopes to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of dolphins in the Mississippi Sound and adjacent waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. IMMS is proud to announce that our Ocean Adventures Marine Park is the only facility of its kind in the Mississippi-Louisiana-Alabama sub-region, providing on-site educational programs for the public and students along the Gulf Coast, inviting research and advancement opportunities to institutions of higher learning, and filling a void in dolphin rescue and rehabilitation along the Gulf Coast. The facility houses an educational museum, a 500 seat arena, classrooms, a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, and additional facilities necessary to provide exemplary care for dolphins in every stage of rehabilitation.

A recent break from all of this dreary weather means the IMMS Research Team was able to head back out on the boat! Check out some of the cool pictures they were able to take!

Calving Season is still ongoing, so we saw plenty of mother dolphins with their babies. Other dolphins were socializing with each other or surfing in the swells. Our Research Team was able to identify some iconic dolphins, like FB #649 “Everglades” and ID #1809 “Larry”. Encounters with familiar dolphins like these two helps researchers better understand their behavior, life histories, and the ecology of the entire Mississippi Sound!

It’s World Sea Lion Day! Have you seen McCoy at our Dolphin and Sea Lion Arena at Ocean Adventures?

As one of our animal ambassadors, McCoy helps demonstrate how male California sea lions differ from females. This difference is called sexual dimorphism. In the case of sea lions, males are much larger than females, with thicker necks and pronounced forehead crests. You can learn more about sea lions by visiting Ocean Adventures Marine Park and watching our daily sea lion presentations!

Meet the youngest dolphin at our facility- Indy!

Despite being the youngest, Indy is an incredibly smart and curious dolphin. The behaviors he learns helps keep him both physically and mentally healthy, like all of the dolphins at the park. Book a Meet and Greet today for your chance to meet the cutest little guy around!

Today is Endangered Species Day! Join us tomorrow at 1:30PM in front of Edgewater Mall in Biloxi as we release some of these amazing animals! We look forward to seeing you there!

At IMMS, we are privileged to work with the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle. As the most endangered species of sea turtle, saving every individual helps the population. The Mississippi Sound is an important habitat for them, especially juveniles like the ones that frequently enter our care.
