General information
The Alliance française (French Alliance), or AF, is an international organization that aims to promote French language and culture around the world. Created in Paris on 21 July 1883, by a group of eminent men, including the scientist Louis Pasteur, the diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, the writers Jules Verne and Ernest Renan, and the publisher Armand Colin. The Alliance Française is the largest network of French language and cultural institutions in the world, with chapters in 138 countries, including over 100 chapters in the United States. The Alliance Française du Piedmont is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization and a member of the Alliance Française global community is run by volunteers. Its members represent the mingling of two groups: a French community seeking to stay connected to their French heritage and an American community interested in experiencing French culture
