On Saturday, October 24, World Polio Day, about 34 persons participated in a walk at Schrom Hills Park and Greenbelt Community Center program to raise awareness and funds for eradicating polio worldwide. Participant registration fees (tripled by a Gates Foundation 2-to-1 match) will contribute to eradicating the last 0.1 percent.
Mass vaccination efforts since the 1980s reduced wild polio cases by 99.9 percent, with polio remaining endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Attendees and speakers included 84-year-old polio survivor Griselda Clemons of Hyattsville, who contracted polio as a child in segregated Atlanta and has authored several memoirs about her experiences, and Greenbelter Mary Moien, who recounted her polio survivor father’s experience raising a family and seeking work in Washington, D.C.
