North Texas Basset Hound Rescue, Inc

North Texas Basset Hound Rescue, Inc Official Page of North Texas Basset Hound Rescue - Founded in 1984 - NTBHR is an IRS designated 501c3 non-profit.

We are an all volunteer organization dedicated to the welfare of basset hounds. NTBHR is a pure breed basset hound rescue that was originally formed in 1984 under Basset Hound Cares, an organization that operated under the breed specific Basset Hound Club of America, before rescue groups were popular. We became incorporated in 1997 and ruled as a 501c3 charity organization in 1998. We have rescued

well over 2000 basset hounds since our inception. Our general area of rescue is the Fort Worth and Dallas area, but we also cover many shelters in North Texas from Abilene to Waco, Longview to the Oklahoma border. Our first priority is to rescue basset hounds from area shelters once their time is up there. Secondly, when space is available we take in dogs that are classified as stray, once every effort has been made to locate the dog's owner. Thirdly, we take fully vetted, spayed or neutered basset hounds from owners when we have space available. Money is spent to insure that the bassets are healthy, neutered or spayed, and treatment for heartworms. On occasion we must make the tough decision of euthanasia due to health problems or aggressive behavior. Rescue volunteers receive no compensation for their countless hours and transportation costs. NTBHR is very fortunate to have several veterinarians who provide excellent treatment at a reduced rate. The rewards of a rescue volunteer come from knowing that a basset is getting a second chance and from a slobbery lick and a wagging tail.

What does comfort, love and a soft place to land look like? Check out Doc and Theodore enjoying their foster homes after being sprung from area shelters. Both sweet boys are underweight and need lots of vetting but for now they are happy and living their best life! Thank goodness for fosters that jump in to help.

Yesterday we posted sweet Doc. Today we will meet his two friends - Joe and Peaches. Joe is about 3 yrs old - skinny and covered in fleas, he also needs shots, a neuter, and some TLC.
Peaches is about 4 yrs old - only 37 lbs - needs shots, spay and lots of love. Both could not be sweeter or more loving- they give the best cuddles. We think they were loved just not cared for like they deserve - we will get them healthy and ready for the perfect home! Joe is the Tri-colored boy and Peaches is the red and white female. Check back for updates as we get them vetted. Donations may be made on our website - bassetrescuedfw.org.

We were contacted by an area shelter that had 3 bassets surrendered! Let me introduce Doc - the senior of the bunch - this boy is going to be expensive! So far he needs---
All his shots
Neuter
High heart worm positive - very long road of treatment
Kidney/bladder stones - many!
Heart murmur- may be caused by heart worms
Ear infection also causing an eye issue
Very anemic- almost needing a blood transfusion (he was covered in fleas)
Dental
Severely underweight - only 34 lbs!!!
First job is to get some weight on this boy and start to fight off his infections. Special food for the stones. Recheck of blood work in 2 weeks to see if the anemia improves. Neuter and heart worm will have to wait until he is healthier. Luckily, we have a wonderful foster who will nurse this sweet, sweet boy through all his issues and hopefully get him healthy enough for his fur-ever home. Check back for updates.
Thank you for all your sweet words of support - donations may be made on our website - bassetrescuedfw.org.

Two more cuties joined us yesterday - Charlotte and Lucy. Both need to see our vet and get checked out. Charlotte is probably 2-4 yrs old and appears to be in pretty good shape. Lucy is a sadder story - yes that is a chain she was living attached to- a kind soul convinced her owner to give her up. She is underweight - probably around 5 yrs old and looks like she has been bred a lot. Both are sweet as can be and are ready to be spoiled and loved like they deserve!!
