“Black males and students of color are not failing because they lack grit. They are navigating systems built to exclude them.”
That’s the argument in a new piece from our Executive Director, Dr. Charles Cole III, based on his research paper published in Freedom: Volume 3, “Empowering Agency Over Grit.”
Grit puts the whole burden on the student. Charles writes that it ignores barriers like disproportionate suspension and expulsion, tracking into lower level courses, and lower expectations.

What happens when students are trusted to research the issues affecting them?

At Agentic Voices, Lodestar fellows presented their research on grade inflation and academic proficiency, sharing findings, recommendations, and a vision for how we can better support students.

The conversation didn’t stop at the presentation. Families, educators, and community members engaged deeply with the findings and helped move the conversation forward around adding reading, writing, and math proficiency indicators to report cards so students and families have a clearer understanding of where they stand academically.

This is what being agentic looks like: identifying a problem, researching it, sharing your findings, and working toward real change.

At the agentic Institute, we teach our young people about the process for taking AGENCY over their studies and lives.

How to research, analyze and prescribe solutions to problems the system perpetuates. We need them all to CREATE. They are incredibly capable when the take matters into their own hands.
