Did you know that state funeral boards are run by funeral directors?

I knew this little tidbit, but I was curious about the breakdown of board members vs. public members, so I decided to ask ChatGPT. I made this map based on the data it gave me.

You can find out who regulates funeral boards in your state by searching for your state’s “Board of Funeral Service” website. Look at the list of members and see how many are licensed funeral directors vs. public members.

You can also check your state’s funeral laws to see how the board is required to be structured.

Board oversight can influence what funeral options are available to families and how complaints are handled.

North Carolina’s price survey is up!

Our 2025-2026 Funeral Home Price Survey is here!

In launching this survey, we collaborated with the North Carolina Board of Funeral Service to secure an up-to-date database of the state's 750+ licensed funeral homes. This resource proved invaluable, providing the current contact details necessary for our outreach. A dedicated team of 19 volunteers—including our 11 board members—undertook the task of gathering price data. Since General Price Lists (GPLs) are rarely available online and the Federal Trade Commission has yet to mandate digital transparency, Funeral Consumers Alliance affiliates play a vital role in ensuring consumers have access to this essential information.
