Today, we proudly celebrate Flag Day and honor the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of our nation.

As members of the Gonzales Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, we are especially mindful of the men and women whose dedication to liberty helped shape both Texas and the United States. Our flag reminds us of the values we cherish—freedom, patriotism, service, and the responsibility to preserve our history for future generations.

We encourage everyone to take a moment today to display the American flag, learn about its history, and reflect on the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Together, let us continue to honor our heritage, preserve our stories, and inspire future generations to appreciate the legacy we have inherited.

May Old Glory always wave proudly over our great nation.

The Gonzales Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas had a wonderful time attending the 158th Annual DRT Convention in Fort Worth during the weekend of May 28–30! We enjoyed fellowship with members from across Texas, learned new ways to preserve and share our state's history, and returned home inspired with fresh ideas for our chapter. Thank you to everyone who represented Gonzales and helped celebrate our shared Texas heritage. Texas, One and Indivisible!

May 14 – Treaties of Velasco Day - DRT HONOR DAY

On this day in 1836, the Treaties of Velasco were signed between Antonio López de Santa Anna and David G. Burnet following the Texas victory at the Battle of San Jacinto.

These agreements included a public treaty, in which Santa Anna agreed to withdraw Mexican troops and cease fighting against Texans, and a secret treaty, where he pledged to support recognition of Texas independence and the Rio Grande boundary in exchange for his freedom.

Today, we remember this pivotal moment that helped shape the future of the Republic of Texas and Texas history.

DRT Honor Day | The Battle of San Jacinto
18 Minutes That Changed the World

On April 21, 1836, near present-day Houston, the Texian army led by General Sam Houston launched a surprise attack on General Santa Anna’s Mexican forces—forever changing the course of history.

In just 18 minutes, the Battle of San Jacinto secured a decisive victory for Texas. Over 600 Mexican soldiers were killed and 700 captured, while only nine Texians lost their lives. Santa Anna attempted to escape in disguise but was soon captured, ultimately leading to terms that ended the Texas Revolution.

This battle marked the birth of the Republic of Texas, setting the stage for its annexation into the United States and shaping the future of a nation.

✨ From this brief but powerful moment, nearly a third of what is now the United States would eventually change hands—proving that even the shortest battles can leave the greatest legacy.

📍 Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who fought for Texas independence.

On This Day in Texas History — April 20, 1842

The Adelsverein was organized by 21 German noblemen with a mission to bring settlers to Texas and establish a new German homeland.

By 1844, the first immigrants arrived on the Texas coast, and more than 7,000 Germans would follow—helping shape the rich cultural heritage we still see across Texas today.
