Hutch is one of the dogs that WAMAL helped with from a BYB situation AMAL was notified of. All of the dogs have very shy tendencies and need a lot of love and patience. Living in a very patient foster (or adoptive!) home for these dogs and their rehabilitation process is priceless. Please consider fostering if you can. If you do not have experience with dogs with Hutch’s history and resulting demeanor because of it, our AMAL board members and rescue affiliates are a wealth of knowledge and would be happy to answer any questions. There is also help with ongoing support to help dogs reach their full potential, they deserve it! While AMAL has not met nor evaluated Hutch in person the WAMAL group has hands on experience with this dog and can answer any questions you may have. Please contact Washington Alaskan Malamute Adoption League - WAMAL if you can foster 🖤

Hutch is an 2 year old, 80 lb Malamute that has had quite the journey into rescue, having traveled halfway across the country with help from Alaskan Malamute Assistance League - AMAL. He is understandably nervous and shy with our volunteers, and socializing with other dogs.

Hutch has been making progress recently, such as coming up to his kennel gate more. He is exploring the paddocks at his own pace, and enjoying storytime in his kennel with one of our volunteers who is slowly earning his trust. We hope that he will continue to show us more of his personality. Hutch needs a family that has the time and patience to dedicate to helping him learn how great Malamute life can be.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Hutch, please visit our website and complete an adoption or foster form. Questions? Please email us at [email protected]

CALLING ALL KIND-HEARTED SOULS: HELP US BRING COMFORT TO OUR SHY KENNEL DOGS!

Are you an animal lover with a heart as big as the sky? Do you believe in the power of patience and compassion? If so, we need your help!

WAMAL recently welcomed a few incredibly sweet but shy dogs into rescue. These precious pups have had little to no past social interaction with humans, leaving them fearful and apprehensive around people.

We're seeking volunteers who are willing to spend time at our kennels in the Puyallup, Washington area, offering comfort and companionship to these timid souls. Our shy dog volunteers have the special task of sitting outside the kennels, reading softly to the dogs, or simply speaking in gentle tones to help them acclimate to humans. Your presence alone can make a world of difference in their journey towards trust and confidence.

We provide training sessions tailored to your experience level with large dogs – ranging from 2 to 5 sessions. So, whether you're a seasoned volunteer or a newcomer eager to make a difference, there's a place for you on our team!

If you're ready to open your heart and lend a helping hand to these deserving pups, we invite you to join us in our mission of compassion and kindness. Together, we can make a world of difference – one shy dog at a time.

To sign up or learn more about volunteering with our shy dogs, please contact [email protected]. Please put "shy dog" in the subject line. Let's spread love, comfort, and hope to those who need it most!

1994: That one time an All-AKC registered Alaskan Malamute Iditarod Team ran in the Iditarod!
"Although Nancy Russell did not realize her dream of seeing a Storm Kloud team come down Front Street in Nome, the team had averaged 80 miles a day (covering 600 miles total) through the roughest part of the trail with no injuries, no weight loss, no dehydration, no lactic acid build-up, and they were still willing to go on in spite of sore feet. They had not lost their heart, and they had proved that today's Alaskan Malamute could still do the work it was bred to do.
After the team was in Nome, Martin Buser, winner of the 1994 Iditarod, visited the team to pay homage to them. Martin began his racing career in Switzerland with a team of Samoyeds.
The Malamutes were the media darlings of the race. The Anchorage Times featured a front-page story on the team on Sunday, March 13. At every checkpoint, photographers and TV cameramen swarmed around the team. Schools were dismissed so that teachers could take their classes to see and pet the Mals. More importantly, the natives had a piece of their heritage returned to them. One elderly native took his grandchildren to see the Mals. "Here," the old man told them, "I want you to see these dogs. These were the kind of dogs we used to have.""
