Develop your play alongside incredible playwrights who know their stuff!

Our lead teacher for this is Oil Lamp favorite James Kelsey Nelson. In 2026, James's play The Waterfall Scene was produced at Gallery Players in Brooklyn, his play Scultore was the winner of Bramble Theatre's "Festival of Unfinished Work", and he had nine other short plays produced throughout the country. The world premiere of his play Henchmen will be produced by Theatre Arcana in Chicago this December, and the world premiere of his play Analysis Paralysis will be produced by Playwrights' Round Table in Orlando next April.

Alongside James are Melanie Coffey and Mark Pracht!
Melanie Coffey is a Chicago-based playwright, screenwriter and filmmaker from Connecticut. She earned her MFA from Northwestern University’s Writing for the Screen + Stage program in 2020 and has had her work performed, read and/or screened in cities across the country, the UK and Canada. In Chicago she has been lucky to work with Artemisia Theater, Avalanche Theater, Theater L’Acadie, Pocket Theater, PrideArts, Redtwist Theater and Red Theater. Last year, her science survival play, Time is a Color and the Color is Blue had its World Premiere production with Avalanche Theater and was published at the same time. This summer her play, Deserted had its world premiere at Redtwist Theatre as the headliner of their new play festival. She is a Chicago Dramatist member, an ensemble member of Avalanche Theatre, and a member of the Ice Core Collective.

Mark Pracht has proudly worked in the Chicago theatre community for over 20 years, as an actor, playwright and director. He is the writer and director of the world premiere adaptation of Shane, currently running at City Lit Theater. City Lit also presented his series on the history of the comic book industry, The Mark of Kane, The Innocence of Seduction (which he also directed), and The House of Ideas (Non-Equity Jeff nomination for Best New Work).

Oil Lamp Academy’s Scene Study Mystery/Thriller gives participants a chance to dive into scenes that are full of twists, red herrings, mounting tension, and shocking reveals.
