As housing costs continue to squeeze Americans, an old idea is making a comeback: renting a room instead of an entire home. The number of households sharing space with nonrelatives grew by more than 500,000 between 2017 and 2022, while roughly 21 million “empty nest” households were identified as having at least two extra bedrooms.
