A powerful story can make someone care. But how do we turn that empathy into action?

For NICU Parent Leaders, storytelling can help build partnerships, mobilize resources, advance advocacy, and improve the experiences of families. The opportunity is to move beyond sharing why the work matters and help others understand how they can become part of the solution.

Imagine your newborn is fighting for their life in the NICU, but you’re worried about losing your paycheck if you stay by their side. No parent should have to make that choice. Yet, without adequate paid leave, many NICU families face exactly that reality.

In this week’s episode, we speak with paid leave policy leaders Orli Cotel and Jared Make to explore the gaps in U.S. paid family leave policies and their impact on NICU families.

They discuss the difference between bonding leave and NICU leave, where FMLA falls short, how access to leave affects health equity, and how employers and policymakers can better support families. They also explore Colorado’s paid leave journey and why parents’ lived experiences are essential to driving policy change.
