DV can happen to ANYONE.. even our furry friends

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, at any time. It knows no racial, age, gender, or socioeconomic boundaries and occurs in every community. Leaving the cycle of abuse is never easy, which is why it’s so important to recognize the signs.

Coercive control often precedes or accompanies physical violence. Even without physical abuse, coercive control is recognized as a serious form of domestic abuse. Victims may feel trapped and powerless, believing that leaving is impossible—or too dangerous.

Research has shown a strong connection between intimate partner violence and animal abuse. Abusers may harm or threaten animals as a way to control, intimidate, and isolate their partners.

Animal abuse can have a profound psychological impact on both human and animal victims. It can also become a significant barrier to safety, as many survivors delay leaving an abusive relationship because they fear what may happen to their pets.

We have seen time and time again the devastating impact of interpersonal violence on animal victims. Animals cannot speak for themselves, and their suffering can often go unseen or unheard.

If you ever need to leave an abusive situation, having a safety plan can make a difficult and dangerous time a little safer.

Consider planning ahead:

-Identify a safe place where you and your pets can go.

-Keep important documents, medications, keys, and other essentials somewhere safe and accessible.

-Talk with someone you trust who can help you if you need to leave quickly.

-If possible, make arrangements for your pets so they can remain safe with you or with someone you trust.

-Consider contacting a domestic violence advocate who can help you create a personalized safety plan.

You do not have to make a plan alone. If you need help creating a safety plan for yourself and your pets, support is available.

Our hearts go out to every victim—human and animal—who has suffered because of domestic violence. We share this message in the hope that it reaches the right person at the right time, before it’s too late.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

At Elizabeth’s Village, we know awareness means more than recognizing the signs of abuse. It means believing survivors, respecting their choices, and making sure a safe place is there when they’re ready to reach for one.

Every day, women and children in our community take brave steps toward safety and stability. Our mission is to meet them with shelter, advocacy, and the support they need to begin again.

This month, we invite our village to listen, learn, and stand alongside survivors. The work continues long after October, but today is a chance to say clearly: YOU ARE NOT ALONE 💜

WE CAN DO THIS, VILLAGE! 💜🏡

We need our village now more than ever, and The Christopher Haley Foundation has stepped up in a BIG way: they’ve pledged to match donations to our Porch Light Campaign, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000!!

That means every gift you make can go twice as far for the women and children who turn to Elizabeth’s Village for safety. If our village gives $25,000, this match will bring the total to $50,000.

Will you help us make the most of this incredible opportunity? Give what you can, share this post, and help us keep the porch light on 💜
