Pope Leo warns of misusing AI, making sure that we recognize this and use AI to build Jerusalem.

AI can give us knowledge, but can’t supply wisdom. AI is a tool that should not reduce human dignity.

The technology industry and the Catholic Church are both trying to answer the same question right now. What is artificial intelligence doing to us?
They are not arriving at the same answer.

We went through Pope Leo XIV's new encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, and pulled out four places where the two visions point in completely different directions. Optimization or dignity. Disruption or communion. The machine or the face. The flawless system or the soul that grows through its mistakes.

Swipe through all four. Then sit with the one that lands hardest, because that is usually the one worth talking about.

What if the Resurrection left a physical trace? Evidence on the Shroud of Turin points to a burst of particle and light emission from the body of Christ. A moment science still cannot fully explain.

AI is not something to be feared, but it should always place great importance on the dignity of the human person.

"Every technology shapes those who use it."
Five words. He is not warning us about machines. He is reminding us what they do to us when we are not paying attention.
Most of the AI conversation right now is about productivity. Speed. Output. What the tools can generate. The Pope is asking a different question. What kind of person are we becoming when these tools are the air we breathe?
This is not a new problem. Every generation has had to learn how to live with the tools it inherited. The plow. The printing press. The telephone. The television. Each one quietly rewired what families were, what attention looked like, what children grew up assuming the world was made of.
But this generation is different. Children are being shaped by systems that were engineered, on purpose, to hold their attention longer than they can hold their own. Systems that learn them faster than we can. Systems that do not know them, do not love them, and were not designed to.
The encyclical does not say throw the tools away. It says we have to be the kind of adults who can stay present in a world built to distract us, so that our children learn what presence looks like by watching it.
The Catholic intellectual tradition has been thinking about formation, attention, and the human soul for two thousand years.
What conversation about technology have you been meaning to have with the people you love?
