🚨 GMS PTA Needs Volunteers for 2026–2027 🚨

We are actively seeking volunteers for three critical PTA Board positions for next school year:

• PTA President
• PTA Secretary
• PTA Treasurer

These roles are required for the PTA to actively function. Without all three positions filled, the PTA cannot fully operate, manage funds, hold events, or continue many of the programs and opportunities that support our students and school community.

Programs like student enrichment opportunities, family events, and partnerships with administration, MoCoCAP, and Community Schools depend on a functioning PTA.

The good news: you will not be doing this alone.

Support, guidance, and transition help will be provided. Our current PTA President will continue supporting GMS as the Gaithersburg Cluster Coordinator and will remain a resource to help guide the work and ensure continuity.

You do NOT need prior PTA experience. Organization, communication, collaboration, and a willingness to help students and families go a long way.

If you are interested, curious, or would simply like to learn more before deciding, please reach out:

GMS is strong because people step up for students. We hope you’ll consider being part of that.

Today’s Cinco de Mayo Taco Tuesday Staff Appreciation lunch was a huge success—and it’s all because of YOU!

Thank you to our amazing families and community members who donated food, drinks, and supplies, and to those who took time out of their day to help set up and make everything run smoothly. A special thank you to the volunteer who picked up our catered food all the way from Silver Spring—seriously above and beyond!

From the homemade dishes and flavorful taco fillings to the fresh toppings, staff-favorite drinks, and generous spread of chips, desserts, and supplies, every detail made a difference.

Our staff truly felt appreciated today—and that doesn’t happen without a strong, supportive community behind them.

💙 We are so grateful for each and every one of you who contributed.
💛 You helped create a day that our staff will remember.

Thank you for continuing to show up for our school in such a meaningful way! 💙💛

🌟 GMSxNovavax: Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators 🌟

We had another incredible “Meet a Pro” session this week with Shervon Branch, Senior Manager of Quality at Novavax!

Over 90 students joined us during lunch to hear Shervon share her journey—from growing up in Baltimore City with an early interest in science and health, to building a 25+ year career in biotechnology.

One of the best parts of the session was the conversation with students. They asked thoughtful questions, made connections to their own interests, and engaged in meaningful discussion about future possibilities.

Shervon shared a powerful message with our students:
✨ You can succeed in your education, career, and your passions—you don’t have to choose just one path.

This is what strong community partnerships look like—local professionals giving back, sharing their stories, and helping students see what’s possible for their future.

We are so grateful to Shervon and our Novavax partners for continuing to invest in our students! 💙

We’re excited to share the continued success of GMSxNovavax, a partnership that brings local industry leaders directly into our school to connect students with real-world education and career pathways.

This initiative is a collaboration between MoCoCAP, Gaithersburg Middle School, and the GMS PTA, with the support of Coach Latimer and Ms. Dyson. It was developed by Sumi Moses, GMS PTA President and Lead IT Business Analyst at Novavax, helping build a bridge between our school and the local biotech community. After a strong launch, we are excited to continue and grow this program to create ongoing, meaningful opportunities for our students.

So far, we’ve hosted:

- Kate Malachowski, Director of Manufacturing Science & Technology
- John Kutney, Vice President of Manufacturing

Together, they’ve engaged over 140 students across multiple lunch sessions. Students are recommended by staff to ensure a diverse group of learners, and Novavax generously provides lunch, allowing students to fully participate.

These are not traditional presentations. Students are actively asking thoughtful questions, engaging in discussion, and working through real-world challenges tied to each speaker’s career. The level of curiosity and participation has been outstanding.

🔬 Continuing the Series
Shervon Branch – Senior Manager, Quality (May 4)
Dorothy Johnson – R&D, Vaccine Discovery (May 18)
Paul Kabiritsi – Materials Management & Logistics (June 1)

If you would like to recommend your student for a future session, please email Ms. Dyson - [email protected]

We’re grateful to our Novavax partners for investing in our students and helping us build something that is already making an impact—and will continue to grow in our school community. 💙

We are actively seeking a PTA President for the 2026–2027 school year at Gaithersburg Middle School.

This role is essential to keeping many of the programs, events, and communication families rely on running.

Without a PTA President, we cannot fully support or sustain:

- Book Fairs
- Family and community events
- Student programs and enrichment opportunities
- Communication of important MCPS updates
- Partnerships with administration, MoCoCAP, and Community Schools

The PTA is the connection point between families, students, and the school. The President helps keep that connection strong and consistent.

What does the role involve? (High-level)
- Leading PTA meetings and setting priorities
- Partnering regularly with GMS administration
- Coordinating with board members and volunteers
- Supporting communication to families
- Helping ensure events and programs run smoothly

What it is NOT:
- You are not doing everything yourself
- You are not managing people like a full-time job
- You do not need prior PTA experience

Organization, communication, and a willingness to collaborate matter most.

Built-in support matters and you will have it.
Our current PTA President, Sumi Moses, will continue supporting GMS as the Gaithersburg Cluster Coordinator, and will remain a partner and resource to help guide the work, share context, and ensure continuity.

If you’ve ever appreciated an event, a resource, or a moment that made your student feel included or supported, this is how those things continue.

👉 If you are interested, or even just curious, please reach out - [email protected] or comment below. We are happy to talk through what this role actually looks like day-to-day.

Let’s make sure GMS continues to be a place where students and families feel connected, supported, and informed.

Big moment for GMS! 🙌

Melissa Mollet gave a shoutout to our Career Exploration Day on NBC4 Washington this morning!

Proud to see our students, staff, MoCoCAP & PTA partnership recognized on air. 🎥

04/22/2026

On Friday, more than 30 community volunteers came together with one goal: to inspire the next generation.

By sharing their personal journeys, challenges, and successes, they gave our students a powerful glimpse into the many paths their futures could take. A special moment of the day included welcoming back former GMS student Melissa Mollet, who returned for the first time to share her journey and how she built her career at NBC4 Washington.

Moments like these matter. Representation matters. Connection matters.

Career Exploration Day opened doors, sparked curiosity, and reminded our students that their possibilities are endless.

We had another great GMSxNovavax: Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators session today!

A big thank you to John Kutney, Vice President of Manufacturing at Novavax, who spent time with our students sharing his education and career journey—from chemical engineering at Notre Dame to leading vaccine manufacturing efforts around the world.

Students didn’t just listen—they worked in teams to solve a real-world manufacturing challenge, thinking through problems just like professionals in the field. It was exciting to see their ideas, collaboration, and problem-solving in action!

This series is all about helping students explore different education and career pathways and see how their interests can connect to real opportunities.

We’re grateful to our Novavax partners for continuing to invest in our students! 💙
