We are excited that next week will begin our first-ever VIRTUAL DAR Continental Congress! This will be the first time since our organization's founding in 1890 that DAR members will carry out the business and celebrations of the annual national conference in an entirely online format throughout the week of June 22-28. While our members can't come together in person, they are enthusiastically embracing technology to gather virtually in order to celebrate the success of the organization and demonstrate that the pandemic will not keep us from fulfilling our important mission.

Highlights of some of the 129th Continental Congress award honorees and speakers (who have shared video remarks for the virtual conference online programming) include:

- Secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie Bunch, who will receive the DAR History Award Medal and provide the Opening Night Ceremony keynote address
- Pulitzer Prize winning author Rick Atkinson who will receive the DAR Excellence in American History Book Award for his book "The British Are Coming"
- Henry Louis Gates, Jr. who will be accepting the DAR Media and Entertainment Award on behalf of his PBS program "Finding Your Roots"
- LTG Robert Ashley, Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, who will receive the DAR Patriot Award and provide the National Defense Night Ceremony keynote address
- Dr. Melissa Givens, who will receive the Margaret Cochran Corbin Award for her exemplary military career and recent leadership in mobilizing a temporary field hospital to treat COVID-19 patients

We encourage all DAR members (as well as friends and family!) to log on to the Continental Congress section of the DAR Members' Website (via www.dar.org) next week to check out all of the great online programming for the Virtual 129th Continental Congress.

Maryland State Chapter celebrated George Washington's and Lafayette's friendship at the Washington Memoral Chapel in Pa in October. A skit was performed by our DAR daughters who represented Lafayette's wife, Washington's wife and the wife of another friend who knew both men.
